A pub-goer has been left outraged after he was charged $15.70 for a schooner of beer.

The patron bought a round of two beers while visiting El Loco at Slip Inn, in Sydney, on Good Friday without asking the price first.

He went to tap his card on the eftpos machine to pay for the drinks and thought nothing of it. He then realised after paying that he had been charged $31.55

The high price was due to a 15 per cent public holiday surcharge.

A pub-goer was left in shock after realising he’d been charged over $15.70 for a beer on Good Friday

Had he ordered the same two drinks outside of the Easter long weekend he would have paid $13.70 for each beer.

The man vented his frustration to reddit drawing a mixed reaction from social media users.

Many people said the punter shouldn’t be surprised by high prices on the public holiday.

‘You went to an expensive bar on a public holiday and you’re shocked, shocked! at the price?’ one person wrote.

‘The whole weekend is public holiday rates for workers,’ a second wrote.

Workers rostered on over Easter confirmed it was a good weekend for them to be working.

‘Pretty glad to be working this long weekend, no temptation to go out and over-pay [for] drinks, [I get] double time plus half pay,’ one wrote.

Another added: ‘Same here, 16 hours at $87 an hour. Laughing all the way to the bank, well anyway, smiling after paying the tax man.’

A raft of social media users slammed the prices as too high.

‘That is loco!’ person wrote.

‘Did you get there for unhappy hour? Prices are double,’ another wrote.

‘I’d be to embarrassed to admit to paying that,’ a third wrote.

One person claimed they were cancelling a visit to El Loco after hearing about the prices.

‘Was planning on going there tonight, but not anymore. F*** those prices forever,’ they wrote.

The venue is run by Merivale, a hospitality company run by billionaire Justin Hemmes.

Several slammed the company saying its venues were known for its overpriced food and drinks.

‘It’s what to expect from a Merivale venue,’ one wrote.

‘These prices are straight out extortion. Boycott these f***ing establishments and watch them close down,’ a second added.

Daily Mail Australia approached Merivale for comment.
