Met Office warns wintry showers and rain will batter the UK before mercury rises

Britons wake up to frost after temperatures plunged to -6C overnight – as Met Office warns wintry showers and rain will batter the UK before mercury rises to 15C over first May bank holiday weekend

Britons woke up to a cold and frosty morning today after an Arctic blast saw overnight temperatures plunge to -6C.

Today will be bright and sunny for most – with little to no rain expected – before heavy cloud band pushes through this afternoon and evening.

Wintry showers and heavy, thundery rain will batter the UK throughout the week before the mercury rises to 15C over the early May bank holiday weekend.

Weather in the UK has trended colder this month and, unfortunately, cold Arctic air is expected to bring further drops before Britain really starts to feel like spring.

Many Britons were met this morning with frost covered cars and gardens, after heavy rains made for a wet commute home yesterday evening.

Despite this morning’s precipitation, the Met Office says it will be a bright – but rather chilly – day for most.

Wintry showers will continue across the far north of Scotland today, but the rest of the UK should remain relatively dry.

Some areas will be cloudy by this afternoon, with coverage thickening across the far southwest later. It will remain rather cold, but meteorologists note the chill will be offset by generally light winds and sunshine.

The wintry mix hitting the north is expected to continue overnight. It will remain frosty in northern areas, but will be patchy due to increasing cloud cover in the south. Some southwest regions may be met with light rain and drizzle tonight.

Cold temperatures will stick around tomorrow with odd showers developing throughout the day. Southern communities should brace for drizzly rain while the far northeast could still see a wintry mix.

It will take until the weekend for the mercury to rise significantly, when highs of 17C are expected as warmer Atlantic air arrives from the South West.

Clouds will increase from the southwest Thursday with the possibility of heavy rain in the south later and into Friday.

The holiday weekend forecast still remains uncertain, but forecasters predict it will become warmer – though some showers may roll through, specifically in the west.

‘This week will see temperatures below average for the time of year for many,’ Met Office chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said yesterday.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Nick Silkstone added: ‘It will potentially take until the end of the week for the milder air to push as far north as northern Scotland.’
