Block of flats erupts in flames in Shadwell: Eighty firefighters rush to 24-storey block where ‘most of the 14th floor flat is alight’

Eighty firefighters have rushed to a 24-storey block of flats in London where ‘most of the 14th floor flat is alight’. 

Twelve fire engines and the Brigade’s 64 metre turntable ladder have been called to help fight the fire on Hindmarsh Close in Shadwell.

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers have received more than 65 calls about the blaze after it was first reported at 12.16pm today. 

Crews from Shadwell, Whitechapel, Shoreditch, Dockhead, Millwall and other surrounding fire stations are now at the scene.

Horrifying footage shows huge flames coming out of several windows on the floor as thick black smoke rises into the air. 

People in the area have been advised to keep windows and doors closed and road closures are in place in the area.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
