Grade II-listed manor house owned by the family of Winston Churchill for 350 years goes on the market for £2.5million

A grand manor that was owned by the family of Winston Churchill for 350 years has gone on the market for offers over £2.5million.

The Churchills who lived at grade II-listed Muston Manor were descended from the same line as the former prime minister and also had several politicians in their branch of the family.

The family crest is above the door of the 17th century seven-bedroom property in Piddlehinton, Dorset, which also has a heated swimming pool and tennis court in its three acres of grounds.

Muston was originally held by the Monastery of Cerne until the Dissolution of Monasteries by Henry VIII in the 1530s. It was sold, along with other abbey land, to John Bartlett and then bought by the Churchills in 1609.

The Churchills have the longest known connection with the village of Piddlehinton of any family.

They built the current Muston Manor, believed to be in 1650, and several members of the family served as High Sheriff of Dorset.

The family sold the property in 1901 to Clement Tory, but Commander Kenneth Churchill and his wife Margaret bought it back in 1915 and it was sold by their son John in 1976.

The house has 5,748 sq ft of accommodation over three floors. On the ground floor it has an entrance hall, sitting room, dining room, drawing room, study, kitchen and breakfast room.

The grounds include a croquet lawn, walled garden and wildflower area, as well as a number of fruit trees and a kitchen garden

Polly Greenway, from estate agents DOMVS, who are selling the property, said: 'The sense of history is almost palpable, and perhaps even more so given one family - a branch of the Churchill family - lived here from 1609 to 1901 and then Commander and Mrs Churchill bought it back again in 1915'

‘You can see the Churchill coat of arms above the front door and many Churchills were baptised, married and buried in nearby Piddlehinton church.

‘Muston Manor is, above all, a home still relevant to modern times, with its accommodation providing practical comforts; a high ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms, and reception rooms suitable for both intimate and elaborate entertaining.’
