Floyd Mayweather, widely considered the greatest boxer of all time, has reportedly offered to pay for the funeral of George Floyd.

The death of Floyd last week in Minneapolis has sparked mass scenes of protest across the United States, worldwide and among famous faces in the sporting world.

Now, TMZ is reporting that Mayweather Jr will fund the cost of four memorial services to be held in Floyd’s memory across the United States.

The 43-year-old will reportedly fund services in Houston, Minnesota, Charlotte and another location, which is yet to be determined.

A new update is that Floyd’s family have accepted Mayweather’s proposal, with people close to the undefeated boxer telling TMZ: ‘He is just doing what he feels is right in his heart.’

Unarmed black man Floyd was killed in Minneapolis last week after white police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes.

Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

The shocking incident has sparked days of civil unrest in America and led to protests across the world by demonstrators angry about the brutal and disparate treatment of black people by the police, racism in society and demanding change.

It also comes following the deaths of two other black US citizens, Ahmaud Arbery in February and Breonna Taylor in March, which also caused outrage.

Liverpool’s players, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Lewis Hamilton joined the sporting world’s stand against racism by producing powerful displays of solidarity in the past few days.

‘Nice social distancing’: Fans react with fury on social media as Floyd Mayweather flouts lockdown rules to go sparring in the ring with his team of trainers

  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

Floyd Mayweather has drawn criticism after ignoring lockdown rules to train and spar with members of his team at his boxing gym in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The 43-year-old took to Instagram to share a video of himself getting ready to enter the ring, being helped by several members of his team.

The short clip sees a man wearing a face mask but no gloves as he applies Vaseline to the retired boxer’s face before another helps him strap on his gloves.

Wearing full head gear it was clear that Mayweather, who continues to be linked with another return, was about to engage in some sparring.

However, rather than be excited by the sight of the 50-0 fighter back in his boxing attire, many fans were left unimpressed with Las Vegas under stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus.

Former British super lightweight champion Ashley Theophane shared the video to his Twitter page and the replies mainly centred around Mayweather’s apparent disregard for the pandemic.

‘Nice social distancing,’ wrote one as another questioned why everyone has to stay at home away from non-essential work apart from him.

Another simply wrote ‘guy wearing a face mask but applying Vaseline with no gloves on’, accompanied by a laughter emoticon.

To date, Nevada has recorded 206 deaths due to Covid-19 and over 4,000 confirmed cases.

The United States has been worst hit by the virus with over 50,000 fatalities and nearly one million cases to date.

Floyd Mayweather ‘WON’T fight in 2020 after two family deaths’

Floyd Mayweather ‘WON’T fight in 2020 after two tragic family deaths’… putting an end to speculation he would step back into the ring to face Conor McGregor or Manny Pacquiao

  • Floyd Mayweather has suffered two losses in his family in recent weeks
  • His uncle Roger died at 58 and his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris also passed away
  • Mayweather has been crushed by events and will not return in 2020, reports say
  • He was linked with rematches against Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather’s return to the ring looks unlikely after the star was overwhelmed by two crushing losses in his family.

Mayweather’s ex-girlfriend Josie Harris, who is the mother of his three children, was found dead in her car last week, while his uncle Roger – who trained his nephew for 12 years – passed away at the age of 58 on Wednesday.

The undefeated fighter had been teasing a comeback after last facing Conor McGregor in a mega fight in 2017, with rumours that he could be set to clash against the Irishman again this year.

Another huge rematch against Manny Pacquiao had also been mooted, but TMZ report that Mayweather will put those ambitions on the backburner as he comes to terms with his grief.

Harris was found dead in outside her home in Valencia, Los Angeles County, on March 10, with the pair sharing a tense relationship after dating between 1995 and 2010.

At the end of their time together Mayweather was convicted of domestic violence against her and served two months in prison.

‘I was a battered woman,’ Harris said in 2014. ‘I felt embarrassed about saying I was a battered woman. I felt shame. I felt like it was my fault. What did I do? I didn’t understand what a battered woman was at that time.

But Mayweather, who has never lost in 50 fights, claimed in 2015 that the violence was merely him trying to restrain Harris because she was on drugs – an accusation Harris denied. In the wake of her death he posted a series of pictures of himself with her on Instagram, including one with the caption ‘my baby’.

His second loss in as many weeks was also devastating as he mourned for his uncle Roger, who played a huge role in his career. He was in his corner for 34 of his fights to help him remain unbeaten and conquer the divisions.

‘My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring,’ Mayweather Jr said after his death.

‘Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world.

‘It is a terrible loss for all of us. We are thankful for all the love and well-wishes we have already received as word traveled about Roger’s passing.

‘It helps me to see that he was able to touch so many people through his life in boxing, because he gave so much to the sport, which was his first and longtime love.’

If that wasn’t already enough for Mayweather, he is also reportedly still feeling low after his friend and former basketball star Kobe Bryant passed away in January.

Earlier this year ‘money’ had fuelled anticipation for a huge fight in 2020 by posting a a picture of himself next to McGregor on Instagram, which said ‘Mayweather McGregor 2, 2020.

He had also teased a possible bout with UFC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, but it appears that fans will have to wait a little longer for those fights to come to fruition.

‘My rock’: Floyd Mayweather breaks his silence and pays tribute to his ex-wife Josie Harris

Floyd Mayweather has broken his silence after the death of his ex-wife Josie Harris who was found dead in her car by police in California on Tuesday night.

The boxer shared a stream of flashback photos of the pair together on his instagram feed along with tributes calling her ‘my rock’ ‘my friend’ and ‘my angel and ‘my love’.

Mayweather and Harris had a tumultuous relationship when they dated between 1995 and 2010. The boxing icon served two months in prison when he was convicted in 2010 of domestic violence against her.

Police are not treating her death as suspicious after she was found in a car outside her home in Valencia, Los Angeles County.

The 40-year-old was the mother of Mayweather’s three children and was currently in the middle of a $20 million lawsuit against the boxer after he claimed he used domestic violence against her in 2010 because she was on drugs.

‘I hope someone takes the time to write a proper remembrance of Josie Harris’s life. Gross to see outlets tripping over themselves to report “Floyd Mayweather’s baby mama” died and having nothing to offer but a link to TMZ’s post,’ she added.

‘Very sad news about Josie Harris. I interviewed her about 7 years ago – she had a great spirit and dope personality. Condolences to Floyd and her children,’ said DJ Vlad.

Her death was described as ‘terrible news’ by Twitter user B-Dill and as ‘extremely sad news’ by YBF Chic.

The pair split in May last year after Chloe accused Sam of cheating with Love Island beauty Amber Davies – something he vehemently denied.

Sam hit back by claiming that Chloe was the one who had been unfaithful, and thus a war of words between the pair ensued.

Despite this, the couple appeared to have patched things up by November, with rumours circulating that Sam had moved back into the home they share in Newcastle.

Conor McGregor could be lining himself up for a sensational return to the boxing ring and looks to have plenty of options when choosing his next opponent.

The Irishman, who suffered a 10th-round stoppage defeat by Floyd Mayweather in his first professional fight back in August 2017, has teased that he could once again step inside the squared-circle.

But who could McGregor realistically face? Here, Sportsmail goes through four potential opponents.

Floyd Mayweather

McGregor has made it no secret that he would like to step back into a boxing ring and a money-spinning rematch with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is certainly on the cards.

Their first fight was one of the most lucrative fights in sporting history and a sequel would likely rake in similar figures given their personalities.

However, should there be a rematch, the Irishman wants to walk away as the victor.

Speaking last month, McGregor said ahead of his fight with Donald Cerrone: ‘I would love that Floyd rematch. I thought I done very well. I thought with some slight adjustments I would have done even better. Now I think I would I would take the victory.’

Manny Pacquiao

The allure of fighting McGregor appears to be too big a chance to pass up on for some high-profile boxers.

And Manny Pacquiao appears to be one of the front-runners to get a slice of the action with McGregor confirming that he’s held talks with the Filipino over a fight.

McGregor has made it no secret that he wants a world title in boxing and is motivated by pursuing history in both sports so this is the kind of match-up to pique his interest.

Reports last week even suggested a fight could happen in the near future after the 41-year-old signed a deal with McGregor’s management company, Paradigm Sports.

Paradigm have pledged to take care of Pacquiao’s ‘commercial and competitive endeavours’, meaning a blockbuster meeting with McGregor is now high up on the list of priorities.

Terence Crawford

While fights with Mayweather and Pacquiao would certainly garner a lot more interest, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has proposed a slightly different proposition.

Last month, Arum suggested that McGregor could sign a two-fight deal with Terence Crawford, where the duo would take each other on once in the ring and once in the cage.

‘You’ve got an elite boxer in Terence Crawford fighting an elite MMA guy in Conor McGregor under MMA rules,’ Arum told ESPN last month. ‘You don’t think that would be interesting and something the public would want to see? I think it’s very realistic.’

While Crawford is one of the world’s best boxers, the 32-year-old has a wrestling past and revealed that he still often dabbles in it whenever he has some spare time.

‘I always had the talent for wrestling, but I liked to throw my hands. I liked punching people in the face more than hugging them,’ Crawford said. ‘My dad was a wrestler, my uncle and my grandfather wrestled, and they were always teaching me the moves. I just liked boxing more.

‘A lot of people may say if Terence goes into the octagon he will get crushed, but they don’t know me.’

Paulie Malignaggi

This is a feud that has been rumbling on for a few years now and would make logical sense for the pair to finally have it out in the ring.

While Malignaggi did retire in 2017, the proposition of facing McGregor in the ring could be a very tempting proposition.

Since he hung up his gloves, Malignaggi joined the Irishman’s team and helped him train for his fight with Mayweather back in 2017.

However, things apparently turned violent during a sparring session leading to Malignaggi quitting the team.

The American boxer was asked by talkSPORT last September if he’d be willing to settle things inside the ring, which Malignaggi responded: ‘Yeah, course. Totally, I’d fight him winner takes all, I’ve said that for years.

‘Whoever loses doesn’t get a penny, I’d be all for that. In the octagon he beats me, come on. We can do it bare-knuckle, we can do it boxing.’

McGregor also revealed last month that he’s still considering a fight with Malignaggi inside the ring.

PS While a return to boxing is on the cards, McGregor is also considering his options in UFC as he enjoyed an explosive comeback to the octagon last month when he took apart Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in just 40 seconds.

Floyd Mayweather’s uncle has revealed his nephew is planning to fight UFC duo Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov on the same day in what would be a historic double header.

Mayweather is locked in ongoing talks to fight McGregor and Khabib in the boxing ring as he plans to return to the ring.

And his uncle has said Mayweather wants to fight McGregor and Khabib in a sensational ‘day and night’ double header.

Jeff Mayweather, Floyd’s uncle, told VegasInsider.com of his potential return: ‘Floyd is talking about the possibility of fighting McGregor and Khabib in the same day, which he could easily make happen. There have already been talks with Floyd and Dana White about making a deal.

‘Floyd is no longer the top of his sport, but he’ll beat both of them. He could beat both of them back to back, one in the day time, one in the night time – it doesn’t matter, they’d have no chance, it’s easy for him.

‘Floyd said one in the daytime and one in the night, it’ll be something that’s never been done before. Double pay-per-view, expensive a** buy. He’d knock Conor’s a** out early because if he knows he has a second fight coming, he’s not going to put on a show like last time. He’d beat the s***t out of Conor.

‘Floyd is a master of planning these things. He’s the one that always turns nothing into something huge. These things are expected of him. It’s evolution, times change. You’ve got to roll with it, and if you don’t roll, you lose.

‘Why would he stay retired when he can fight UFC guys that couldn’t beat him up if he was f*****g 60 years old? At some point he does need to retire, but if he’s gonna be fighting guys who never really boxed, why not carry on? He’s gotten more than these guys could ever learn, so why not take the money?

‘I’m sure it’s gonna be hard for him to come back because he has been out of action for a while, but he’s gonna get back into that same old mode – and when he gets into that mode, you pick any UFC fighter in the damn world, they’re not gonna touch him. Simple.’

Mayweather, himself, said last week that he is open to the idea of arranging a rematch with McGregor and a bout with his UFC rival Khabib.

The 42-year-old has been drumming up speculation with a series of social media posts, taking to Instagram to promote ‘Mayweather McGregor 2, 2020.’

The undefeated boxing legend added more clarity while recently speaking as a guest on the Drink Champs podcast.

‘I even talked about fighting Khabib and Conor in the same day,’ Mayweather revealed.

‘Khabib in the day and Conor at night. You pay one fee, probably $250 (£190), and you get both fights.’

UFC president Dana White has made no secret of his willingness to facilitate a second blockbuster Mayweather-McGregor showdown, after the first meeting went down as one of the most lucrative in boxing history.

Speaking about Mayweather on air in the immediate aftermath of McGregor’s recent UFC victory over Donald Cerrone, White appeared convinced something could happen.

‘We’ll see what happens. The discussions are always ongoing. They never stop,’ he said.

‘You know Floyd is going through money fast. He’s far from retired, and that rematch will happen at some stage.’

Mayweather, who has won all 50 of his professional fights, fought McGregor in his last bout in August 2017.

The American knocked McGregor out in the 10th round to collect a $100m (£77m) cheque.
