Dele Alli handed one match ban for appearing to mock Asian man over coronavirus

Dele Alli is BANNED for Tottenham’s first match back in the Premier League against Manchester United over the ‘racist’ social media video he posted mocking an Asian man over spreading coronavirus

  • Dele Alli appeared to mock an Asian man over coronavirus in February
  • Alli posted a video showing a man of Asian descent with the caption: ‘Corona whatttttt, please listen with volume’
  • Alli deleted the video within minutes of posting it and apologised twice
  • He told the FA hearing that he had been ‘betrayed’ by a friend on Snapchat
  • He will miss Spurs’ first game back against Manchester United a week on Friday
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

Dele Alli has been hit with a one-game ban by the Football Association for his controversial social media post earlier this year in which he appeared to mock an Asian man over the coronavirus.

The Tottenham star has been at the centre of an FA investigation and will now miss his team’s Project Restart opener against Manchester United a week on Friday after disciplinary chiefs slapped the midfielder with a one-match suspension and £50,000 fine.

He will also be required to undertake an FA educational course.

Alli posted a video showing a man of Asian descent with the caption: ‘Corona whatttttt, please listen with volume.’

In the next part of the Snapchat story, the midfielder wears a mask while appearing to feign concern. He then shows a bottle of handwash, accompanied by the caption: ‘This virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me.’

Alli deleted the video within minutes of posting it and apologised twice, nevertheless the FA have deemed the footage to have racial connotations.

Alli said: ‘In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my actions on 6th February.

‘It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined.

‘I’m grateful that the FA has confirmed that my actions were not racist because I despise racism of any kind.

‘We all need to be mindful of the words and actions we use and how they can be perceived by others.’

England international Alli has issued an apology over his use of the social media video

The FA commission wrote: ‘The creation and distribution of the offending material was more the product of spontaneous ill-judged stupidity rather than any sense of malicious intent.’

In November, Manchester City star Bernardo Silva was banned for one game and fined £50,000 for a social media post in which he compared team-mate Benjamin Mendy to the character on a packet of Conguitos – a chocolate brand available in Spain and Portugal.

An FA commission accepted Silva did not intend to be ‘racist’ against Mendy, but still felt compelled to dish out the suspension given the connotations.

Sportsmail revealed in February that Alli would tell disciplinary chiefs the video was not racist but a misjudged joke.

Silva’s social media post regarding Mendy was made on Twitter which is a public forum.

Unlike Silva’s post regarding Mendy which was made on Twitter – a public forum – Alli’s video was meant for private consumption; the England star posting it on his private Snapchat account, meaning only people he has verified have access to his posts.

However, the video in question was somehow leaked to the Daily Star on Sunday.

In his hearing, Alli said that he had been ‘betrayed’ by a friend who sold the video on.

Liverpool could join Arsenal and Rangers in winning the league at their rivals

Liverpool could deal Everton the ultimate humiliation by winning the Premier League title in their backyard next month as football returns after the coronavirus pandemic.

The two sides are set to meet in the Merseyside derby during the first weekend of full fixtures following the restart with plenty to play for – and that’s an understatement!

The Reds sit 25 points clear of reigning champions Manchester City as they look to win their first-league title in 30 years.

Having won 27 of 29 games played this term – drawing one and losing the other to Watford – Liverpool only need six points from their last nine games to be handed the trophy.

Should City lose their first game back to the Gunners on June 17, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be confirmed as champions if they beat rivals Everton just a few days later.

A result against the Toffees next month could see them join the exclusive list of clubs that have been fortunate enough to claim a title in their rival’s backyard.

Including those such as Arsenal who won at both Old Trafford and While Hart Lane and Rangers who secured the title at Celtic Park in 1999.

1989 – Arsenal win at Anfield

Regarded as one of the most dramatic season-finales in history, Arsenal won the league title against Liverpool at Anfield in the final moments of the game.

Liverpool, the defending champions, had won 17 of their last 18 fixtures in all competitions. The Merseyside team were expected to win again as they hadn’t lost by two goals at Anfield since February 1986.

Whereas Arsenal, the underdogs, were trying to win the title for the first time since 1971 and needed to win by two or more goals to secure the title.

Arsenal manager George Graham used Steve Bould as a third central defender and his 3-5-2 system was designed to frustrate.

There were no goals in the first half but the complexion of the game changed dramatically after an opening goal from Alan Smith on 52 minutes gave the visitors hope.

Before an injury-time winner from Michael Thomas made their title dreams become a reality.

1999 – Rangers win at Celtic Park

Old Firm games between Rangers and Celtic are known for their sectarian songs, offensive banners, fierce atmospheres and violence.

The Glasgow derby is one of the fiercest rivalries in sport, let alone the result of the match leading to the confirmation of the title.

On May 2, 1999, Rangers headed to the Celtic Park in hope of clinching the title by winning the Old Firm.

Rangers won the game 3-0 thanks to Neil McCann and Jorg Albertz, securing the title at Celtic Park that will live long in the memory for any Gers supporters.

However, the game was later dubbed as the ‘Shame Game’ following a series of incidents during the game.

Fans tried to invade the pitch twice while the game was being played and also targeted referee Hugh Dallas by throwing a coin at his head during the match. Dallas was forced to receive treatment on the pitch.

Dallas went on to award a penalty to Rangers and send off two Celtic players, causing more drama.

2002 – Arsenal win at Old Trafford

Arsenal made the trip to Old Trafford in the penultimate game of the 2001-2002 campaign, in the hope of sealing an historic Double.

Four days before the trip to Manchester, the Gunners won the FA Cup beating Chelsea 2-0 with goals from Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg.

Despite the absence of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Tony Adams on May 8, 2002, Wenger’s side secured the title after Sylvain Wiltord, on his 100th appearance for the club, slotted home the winner.

The Gunners finished seven points clear of United and ended the campaign with 13 consecutive victories as they went unbeaten away from home and scored in all 38 matches.

2004 – Arsenal win at White Hart Lane

April 25, 2004, marks the date when Arsenal’s Invincibles made history by securing the Premier League title at White Hart Lane and celebrated in front of the home fans.

Understandably, a move that made waves and fuelled the flames even further of the Gunners’ long-running rivalry with fellow north Londoners Tottenham.

Though, celebrations were in order as Arsene Wenger’s team went on to win the Premier League without a single defeat – earning themselves the nickname ‘The Invincibles.’

Tottenham, did however, hold The Invincibles to a 2-2 draw, with a late equaliser from Robbie Keane, but one point was enough to seal the deal.

Liverpool’s title run-in, Arsenal vs Spurs and Chelsea games – the Premier League’s ‘high risk’ ties

Police call for SIX ‘high risk’ Premier League games to be moved to neutral venues over crowd fears… with Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Newcastle all facing high-profile switches

  • Police have identified six ‘high risk’ PL games that could be at neutral venues
  • There are concerns fans could gather near grounds and breach lockdown rules
  • Liverpool’s matches are of particular concern given they will win the title soon
  • There is concern about two Newcastle games amid their impending takeover

Police have identified six fixtures of particular concern which will be staged at neutral venues when the Premier League returns, Sportsmail can reveal.

Three games involving Liverpool will be moved to a neutral venue, including the Merseyside derby and their likely title-winning game, though there is no possibility of Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti’s sides meeting in Manchester.

There is also a concern about two Newcastle games.

The full list of games police hold concerns over are: Manchester City v Liverpool, Manchester City v Newcastle, Manchester United v Sheffield United, Newcastle v Liverpool, Everton v Liverpool and the game which takes Liverpool to the title.

At yesterday’s Premier League meeting 12 games were mentioned as potentially being moved to neutral venues – including a series of London derbies, as revealed by Sportsmail. The clubs involved still expect these matches to be moved, too.

While there had been an initial plan to play all matches at neutral grounds, that was dismissed out of hand but other games could now be switched – including Liverpool’s remaining matches at Anfield before they inevitably take the title.

The six fixtures of concerns have been identified after individual forces were asked which games concerned them.

As yet, there are no fixtures relating to relegation-threatened sides, which could avoid the row over neutral venues which saw the bottom six insist that they wanted to retain home advantage.

But Sportsmail understands that additional relegation fixtures could be added if that aspect of the resumed season creates crunch matches in which large numbers are likely to gather.

It has not yet been decided where neutral games will be staged. Some of Britain’s 43 police force areas have said they are willing to stage them. Some have indicated they are not.

Discussions on that will now take place between the Premier League and senior football police officers, who today praised the league for their cooperative and positive contribution to security discussions.

Greater Manchester Police, whose chief constable expressed concerns about some fixtures two weeks ago, have identified three fixtures in their force area as ones they prefer to be held at neutral venues.

The United v Sheffield United match is unexpected and could be a consequence of the two cities’ relative proximity and this being the Blades’ first season back in the top flight.

Newcastle’s huge fan base clearly concerns officers, with the possible Saudi takeover at St James Park heightening the air of expectation.

Liverpool need just two more wins to capture the Premier League and it could come as early as the opening weekend, if Manchester City lose to Arsenal and they beat Everton.

The likes of Leeds and West Brom in the Championship could also be asked to play at neutral venues as both are edging towards promotion.

A plan is now in place for the Premier League season to be concluded by July 25, with 92 games to be held in 39 days.

Premier League chief Richard Masters said in a statement on Thursday: He said: ‘We have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday, June 17.

‘But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority.

‘The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters.

Liverpool leapfrog Manchester City AND Chelsea in KPMG’s list of Europe’s most valuable clubs

Liverpool leapfrog Manchester City AND Chelsea in KPMG’s list of Europe’s most valuable clubs as their valuation jumps 19 per cent to £2.25BILLION… but they still lag some way behind mega-rich Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United

  • European champions Liverpool were biggest winners in KPMG Rich List
  • Their values soared by almost a fifth to £2.25bn during a successful 2019
  • That saw them leapfrog Manchester City and Chelsea to fifth in the rankings
  • But they still trail the wealth of Real Madrid, Man United and Barcelona
  • Real hang on to top spot in KPMG list with an enterprise value of £2.95bn
  • United saw a slight decrease in value but remain second with worth of £2.84bn

Liverpool have leapfrogged Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea in the list of Europe’s most valuable clubs with their valuation soaring by 19 per cent to almost £2.25billion.

But the reigning European champions remain some way behind the wealth of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Barcelona in the annual rich list.

The Bernabeu club remain top of KPMG’s rankings for 2020 with an enterprise value of £2.95bn following a small increase of 1.5 per cent over the past year.

Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019 helped them soar up the KPMG Rich List

Real Madrid remain top of the KPMG rankings, however, with an enterprise value of £2.95bn

But it was enough to keep them ahead of United in second place, whose value actually went down two per cent to £2.84bn over the past 12 months.

That has allowed Barcelona, who overtook Bayern Munich into third, to close the gap following a 12.2 per cent rise in value to £2.7bn.

But Liverpool are the big winners off the back of their Champions League triumph last season and likely Premier League success if this season can resume.

A rise in value of 19.3 per cent was recorded by KPMG’s figures, which saw them move ahead of Man City and Chelsea with an enterprise value of some £2.25bn.

City recorded a tiny 0.3 per cent contraction and are worth £2.21bn, while Chelsea, who won last season’s Europa League, are valued at £1.88bn, down 6.3 per cent.

Tottenham, who lost to Liverpool in last season’s Champions League final, climbed a place into eighth, while Paris Saint-Germain recorded enormous growth of 36.7 per cent to move above Arsenal and Juventus into the top 10.

Arsenal, who have missed out on Champions League football for the past two years, slip 13.2 per cent in value to 10th at £1.57bn.

However, KPMG make clear their figures were compiled five months ago on January 1 and do not include the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has hit every football club. Next year’s valuations will take this impact into account.

Other big winners included Inter Milan, whose value rose by 33.7 per cent, lifting them to 14th position and fellow Serie A club Roma, who climbed five spots to 16th.

In all, there are eight Premier League clubs in the top 20, with West Ham and Leicester adding to those in the top 10.

Thieves who raided Dele Alli’s house ‘threatened to butcher girlfriend Ruby Mae’s dog’

Robbers who broke into Dele Alli’s £2million Hertfordshire mansion threatened to kill his girlfriend Ruby Mae’s dog during the terrifying raid early on Wednesday morning.

Ruby Mae was reportedly playing pool with the Tottenham and England star and his brother Harry Hickford when the 23-year-old footballer was punched in the face by knife-wielding thugs who forced their way in to the home.

The dog, named Uno after Dele’s favourite card game, was left unharmed but £350,000 worth of jewellery and watches were stolen according to police, who continue to investigate.

A source told the Daily Star: ‘They were pretty nasty and after smashing their way in and punching Dele, they threatened everyone with physical harm unless they complied with their demands.

‘They even threatened to kill the dog if things didn’t go the way they wanted them to. It was pretty scary.’

As Sportsmail exclusively revealed, the Tottenham and England midfielder was ‘thumped in the face’ during the ordeal but did not suffer serious injury.

Two males wearing balaclavas broke into the back of the property before threatening the Spurs star.

Following a scuffle, during which Alli suffered a minor facial injury, the two culprits took various items including jewellery and watches before fleeing.

The 24-year-old’s property is covered by CCTV and the footage has been passed on to the police, who have opened an investigation.

The player and his model girlfriend Ruby Mae, who is 23, have been together since early 2016.

She was by his side at the Euros that summer and the 2018 World Cup in Russia before they split for a short time early last year.

They were back together by last summer with Alli reportedly flying Ruby out to Madrid for the Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool at the start of June.

Dele Alli is not the first Premier League star to be targeted by raiders: These football players, managers and owners have also been victims

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been burgled four times – most recently last month when £60,000 worth of watches were taken from his £12m west London home and police believe the same gang stole £1m from the Knightsbridge home of late Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, which has been kept as a shrine since he died in a helicopter crash in 2018.

Earlier in the season, Crystal Palace defender Mamadou Sakho lost items worth more than £500,000 when his house was raided while he was playing away at Southampton.

Several Liverpool players over the years, including Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard, have been hit while away at European games and current Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino moved his family into a hotel following a burglary in 2016.

Angel Di Maria, during his short spell as a Manchester United player in 2014-15, was at home with his wife and children when thieves tried to smash their way into his Cheshire house with scaffolding poles.

As a youngster, Alli moved in with the Hickford family following a difficult upbringing.

Alli and his Spurs team-mates are expected to return to training at the start of next week as the Premier League work towards a June 12 restart date.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called at approximately 00:35hrs on Wednesday, 13 May to reports of a robbery at a residential address in Barnet.

‘Two males gained entry to the property and stole items of jewellery, including watches, before fleeing.

‘One male occupant of the property, aged in his 20s, suffered a minor facial injury after being assaulted. He did not require hospital treatment.

‘No arrests; enquiries into the circumstances continue.’

A spokesperson for Tottenham Hotspur said: ‘We have been offering our support to Dele and those isolating with him.

‘We encourage anyone with any information to help the police with their investigation to come forward.’

The latest incident is the third time in ten months that a football has been targeted by raiders in north London.

Alli’s team-mate Jan Vertonghen fell victim to burglars earlier this year.

The Belgian’s wife and young family were at their home, in Hampstead, when four men broke in armed with knives, demanding cash and jewellery.

The 32-year-old was in Leipzig at the time for the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie, which Spurs lost 3-0.

In July last year, Arsenal stars Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac were chased for a mile by knife-wielding motorbike riders in an attempted daylight car-jacking in north London.

The raid on Dele Alli's home is the third similar incident involving high profile footballers in the north London area in the last 10 months. Jan Vertoghen's home was targeted while he was away playing football, while Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolašinac were attacked in the street in Hampstead. Ozil, a £350,000-a-week midfielder, was ambushed by the robbers as he drove his black Mercedes G-Class through leafy Childs Hill in Hampstead.

But as the thugs surrounded the 4×4, Ozil’s Arsenal teammate and childhood friend, Sead ‘The Tank’ Kolasinac, leapt out and bravely took them on.

But rather than that being the end of the drama, the players were then chased through the mansion-lined streets of north London in Ozil’s 4×4 in a high-speed chase that lasted for more than a mile.

Ozil sped off and overtook traffic on the wrong side of the road as ‘ninja style’ masked moped muggers gave chase before taking refuge at a Turkish restaurant.

In November, at Harrow Crown court, one of the muggers Ashley Smith, 30, was jailed for 10 years after pleading guilty to his part in the ‘quick and violent’ attempted robbery.

Smith, 30 – who was described by judge Ian Bourne QC as a prolific ‘career criminal’ who was well known to police – was out on licence for a 42-month sentence for burglary in 2017 when he tried to carry out the street robbery on the Arsenal stars.

Accomplice Jordan Northover, 26, also admitted attempting to rob the two Arsenal footballers at Harrow Crown Court. He is yet to be sentenced.

Neil Ruddock downs pints at boozy party in photographs which sparked furious row with Paul Merson

These are the photos of Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock downing pints of beer at a boozy party that caused a row between the former England star and Paul Merson.

The pair clashed in the latest series of ‘Harry’s Heroes‘ after Merson, who has suffered from alcohol addiction in the past, took exception to Ruddock downing pints and shots in the pub during filming.

The former England football stars were enjoying a meal with former England stars Mark Wright and David Seaman along with Seaman’s wife Frankie Poultney and Ruddock’s wife Leah Newman.

Notorious football hardman Neil Ruddock threatened to beat up Paul Merson during a heated argument over the former Tottenham and Liverpool defender’s drinking.

Merson delivered a stark warning to an infuriated Ruddock in a TV show, saying that the 52-year-old’s boozing is killing him.

Ruddock was even recorded drinking with a bra on his head, leaving ex-Arsenal star Merson to accost his friend and tell him that his boozing is spiralling out of control.

But Merson, also 52, was soon left in tears after Ruddock furiously retorted and stormed out of the room.

Ruddock had yelled: ‘Don’t shout at me or I’ll get the hump with you.

‘I’ll throw you out the f*****g door. This gives me the hump. F*** off.’

Ruddock told Merson he would throw him 'out the f*****g door' and then stormed out the room

After the bust-up, a visibly emotional Merson delivered his thoughts to the camera.

‘No one wants to die, do they?’ he said. ‘I’d probably say he’s scared, confused, frightened. With Neil, he’s a tomorrow man. Tomorrow never comes. It doesn’t matter if you’re the richest person in the world, or the healthiest, we only get today.’

Ruddock, also on the cusp of tears, reflected on the argument – and admitted that Merson’s warning had ‘hurt’.

He told viewers: ‘I’ve just had a barney with Merse. We love each other. We’ve known each other since we were 16.

‘It’s all right if it’s people you don’t really know telling you “do this, do that”, but when it comes from someone you love, that’s why it hurts so much. It got to me.’

But former Three Lions star Merson, who earned 21 caps during the 1990s, was originally left irked by his old friend’s boozy habits.

After being shown Ruddock’s antics in the pub, Merson said: ‘It’s just winding me up. He’s down there doing bombs and all that, and it’s a joke. He’s sat down with all the lads, and he’s said he’s dying, and they’re drinking with him.

‘If I went in the pub now with them, and said “line me up one”, they’d all go mad. No one would buy me a drink. But they don’t get it with Razor. What’s the difference?

‘You’re getting pictures through with a bra on your head. This is the sad thing, because this is me nine months ago… not knowing what to do, how I’m going to stop. Not seeing any way out. I see that in him now, and that’s why it’s quite hurtful.’

But the pair soon patched up their differences in an emotionally-charged discussion, with Ruddock vowing to change for the better.

Harry’s Heroes: Euro Having A Laugh tracks a team of former England internationals, including Seaman, Merson, Matt Le Tissier, Rob Lee, Ray Parlour, Lee Sharpe, Mark Chamberlain, Wright, Ruddock and Lee Hendrie, managed by former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp and his assistant John Barnes.

Last year the side overcame a Germany Legends team after building up their fitness by increasing their exercise regimes and improving their diets.

This time around Redknapp’s outfit, who lost almost eight stone between them in 2019, will embark on a tour of Europe, taking on sides in France and Italy before the rematch against Germany.

And Merson has admitted that the ITV show has saved his life.

He said: ‘From last time, I’m 100 times better, my life’s changed around. Where I was last year compared to now I can’t explain.

‘The impact of being in the team, it saved my life. I was drinking at least 35 pints a week and gambling. But I’m sober and bet free now. As soon as I addressed the drinking I didn’t gamble.

‘I’ve come to realise I’m powerless over alcohol – I’m an alcoholic.

‘I have a disease and it is a disease. My drinking and gambling left a lot of wreckage.

‘As an alcoholic, recovering now those things are hard for me. It’s quite sad really because you look now and think what a waste of a life, some of it.’

Harry’s Heroes: Euro Having a Laugh starts next Monday at 9pm.
