Hit-and-run driver fleeing police kills young woman stood near bus stop in south London before dumping car

  • Police signalled a vehicle to pull over but it sped off and hit a woman in her 20s 
  • The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene in Brixton Hill last night 
  • Police said officers had not been pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash

A woman in her twenties died after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver who fled police last night. 

Officers had signalled for the vehicle to pull over but it sped off and later hit the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene in Brixton Hill, London, at around 9.45pm. 

The Met Police said officers had not been pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash. Officers were pictured recovering a black Mercedes with a damaged wing mirror and windscreen in Brixton. 

A forensics tent was erected at the scene and police cars were seen lining the street, the Evening Standard reported.

It is not yet known why the vehicle was initially instructed the driver to pull over. 

‘The car sped off from police and was then involved in a collision with a pedestrian,’ a Met Police spokesman said in statement.

‘The car did not stop at the scene.

‘The car was found abandoned nearby and enquiries are ongoing to trace the occupants.

‘A woman in her twenties died at the scene. Officers are in the process of informing all her next of kin.’
