Matrix 4 filming kept downtown San Francisco up all night as fireballs lit up the sky and at least five helicopters flew at 300 feet, shattering the usual tranquility.

Cameras rolled from 6pm to midnight Saturday and Sunday, and 5am to 9am Sunday leaving residents tossing and turning in their beds. 

Hollywood icon Keanu Reeves, who plays Neo in the films, is thought to have been acting for the shoot, along with city mayor London Breed.

One video shows fireballs blasting into the night sky next to tower blocks while a second shows at least five helicopters flying between skyscrapers at 300 feet.

And two helicopters were seen flying around tongues of flames in an illuminated downtown street. 

Two people were also seen hanging on a zip wire hung between tower blocks as a helicopter hung overhead in scenes filmed yesterday morning. 

‘Matrix 4 creating a war zone in downtown San Francisco,’ tweeted one resident. ‘Super low flying helicopters and explosions right on Market and Pine Street.’

Another said: ‘Coming out of Embarcadero station tonight and was greeted by low flying helicopters from the future.’

A third tweeted, ‘when you live right next to Matrix 4 set’, and uploaded a video of helicopters hovering between the skyscrapers.

It is unclear why city authorities allowed the late night filming, but the city’s mayor, London Breed, is expected to appear on the film, reports the San Francisco Examiner.

Warning residents of the approaching filming, AlertSF said: ‘Low-flying helicopters with sound effects will be conducting flyovers in the Financial District for filming in support of movie production.

‘The aircraft will fly at approximately 300 to 1,500 feet. Street closures in the area will be in effect.’ 

Actor Keanu Reeves, 55, was seen leaving the Omni hotel in the city with girlfriend Alexandra Grant, 46, on Thursday.

The celebrity carried a bag as he walked to wards their car in the City By The Bay area.

Filming for Matrix 4, which will be released in May 2021, began in early January. It is being co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski.

Announcing the film she said: ‘Many of the ideas [sister] Lilly [Wachowski] and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. 

‘I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.’
