Coronation Street: Geoff’s control of Yasmeen sparks 146 complaints to Ofcom after he forced her to eat from the BIN and trapped her in a box

Coronation Street has sparked more than 100 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom, as Yasmeen Nazir continues to be tormented by her twisted husband Geoff Metcalfe.

In upsetting scenes Yasmeen has been left in tears due to her husband’s controlling behaviour, including claiming that she was an alcoholic, confiscating her credit cards, and even forcing her to eat from the rubbish bin.

It comes after actress Shelley King admitted she had to recall ‘dark moments’ in her life to film the upsetting scenes, as she hinted that things are set to get even worse in the coming weeks.

Four episodes of Corrie ranging from 15th January to 5th February have sparked 146 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom.

A peak of 74 complaints came at the start of February, as upsetting scenes saw Yasmeen crying out in horror after Geoff (played by Ian Bartholomew) trapped her in his magician’s box.

A spokesperson for Ofcom told MailOnline: ‘We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.’

MailOnline has also contacted representatives for Coronation Street for further comment.

Since then Geoff’s treatment of Yasmeen has only gotten worse as he demanded she spend her spare time cleaning, and in the coming days he will even kill her beloved pet chicken Charlotte.

Earlier this week, actress Shelley hinted that there’s more drama in store for her character as the controversial plot rumbles on.

Discussing the hardships of filming such a storyline, Shelley explained: ‘Soaps are a huge challenge because we don’t get a lot of rehearsal time and particularly with a storyline like this, you have to call on your own emotional memory.’

She continued: ‘You have to look at some very dark moments in your life in order to recreate… it’s been very difficult. There’s only so much a tear stick can do.’

The soap star also admitted that although the scenes originally sparked backlash from viewers, the storyline has actually helped several people realise they may be in the same situation as her on-screen alter-ego.

She said: ‘Initially people were very upset by it because it’s quite a difficult watch, but as we’ve gone on, both men and women, have gone on to identify or seen circumstances they can relate to.

‘I’ve had a lot of direct messages on Twitter of women of all ages, and men as well, telling me some awful stories… people are becoming [more] aware.’
