Married At First Sight: TV watchdog investigates amid toothbrush incident

Married At First Sight under fire amid toothbrush incident: TV watchdog is hit with complaints after David’s sick revenge on cheating wife Hayley

Married At First Sight has been the subject of three formal complaints to the  Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), it emerged after Wednesday night’s episode.

At the latest dinner party, it was revealed that David Cannon had contaminated his ‘wife’ Hayley Vernon’s toothbrush with faeces after discovering she had cheated on him. This act of revenge sparked outrage on Twitter and calls to boycott the show.

ACMA has notified Channel Nine of the complaints and the broadcaster now has 60 days to respond to the media watchdog.

An ACMA spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: ‘Under the co-regulatory system, the ACMA will refer complainants to the broadcaster in the first instance.

‘If the complainant does not receive a response from the broadcaster within 60 days, or is not satisfied with the response, they may refer their complaint to the ACMA.’

The complaints were about the 2020 season of Married At First Sight, and not about Wednesday’s episode specifically.

The toothbrush incident was exposed at Wednesday night’s dinner party.

David had scrubbed faeces off a toilet with Hayley’s toothbrush before returning it to its holder after discovering she had kissed another groom, Michael Goonan.

Hayley used the toothbrush for five days before being told that footage of David contaminating it was being circulated among cast members.

She confronted him over his actions at the dinner table, before playing the video on her phone in front of the other couples.

Last year, ACMA was bombarded with complaints after Married At First Sight aired a scene of Jessika Power and Dan Webb getting intimate in bed.

The 25-second scene, which was labelled ‘disgusting’ by viewers, showed Dan standing in his underwear and crawling into bed with Jessika.

They passionately kissed under the covers, before Dan reached over and turned the light off.

ACMA is an independent government agency which monitors the regulation of broadcasting, radiocommunications, telecommunications and online content through legislation, regulations, standards and codes of practice.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Nine and ACMA for comment.
