Relationship expert? Today Show host Karl Stefanovic has a fiery exchange with Married At First Sight villain Michael Goonan over his treatment of ‘wife’ Stacey Hampton

Married At First Sight star Michael Goonan left Today show host Karl Stefanovic furious on Monday by making rude remarks about his on-screen wife, Stacey Hampton, during a fiery exchange on the breakfast show.

The two men went toe-to-toe when Karl, 45, questioned Michael about his wild nights out which have upset his law graduate wife on the show.

The cocky company director, 28, angered Karl when he labelled Stacey a ‘controlling girl’ and said his partying was a way for him to ‘rebel’ against her.

Relationship expert? Today Show host Karl Stefanovic had a fiery exchange with Married At First Sight villain Michael Goonan during an interview on the show on Monday

‘If you say, ”I want to go out for a drink”, [she] is like, ”No, you are not doing that”. To the point I was rebelling a bit,’ Michael said.

But Karl was having none of the excuses, and he took Michael to task over his questionable behaviour on the show.

‘When you say controlling you mean a woman who just wants you to spend time with her,’ Karl told the reality star bluntly.

Michael said the expectation was that he would ‘wait like a puppy dog’ until Stacey was ready to go out, which he wasn’t prepared to do.

The interview went from bad to worse when Michael then proceeded to compare the couple’s apartment to a ‘jail cell’ and said he ‘wanted to go out’ to have fun.

‘It’s not that bad!’ Karl cut in, calling his excuse an exaggeration.

‘You are trapped to a point,’ Michael replied. ‘You do want to go out. You want your freedom,’ he added.

‘Mate, you came on a show to find love. And you’re supposed to spend time with the person you’re married to,’ Karl barked back.

Michael has been involved in a cheating scandal on the show, recently kissing his co-star Hayley Vernon during a night out.

Michael ended his interview with Karl by admitting he did let Stacey down.

‘I feel like I let her down big time,’ he said.

Michael said he was thinking about ‘legging it’ out of Sunday’s commitment ceremony, but wanted to give Stacey the respect of attending and then decided to ‘stay’ in the experiment.

‘I’m not going to put the Nikes on. I’m actually going to speak to her,” he said.

‘I’m going to give her the decency and respect to go up there [and talk].’

Married At First Sight continues on Channel Nine, Monday, 7.30pm.
