World Wildlife Day isn’t until Tuesday, March 3, but the date honors the importance of wildlife in nearly every aspect of human well-being, as well as the planet’s overall health.

The holiday is also designed to raise awareness about the threats across the globe facing wildlife and the need for global conservation.

The UN instituted the day in 2013 in honor of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in 1973.
