Martin was a member of the singing group from 1960 to 1962, replacing founding member Betty McGlown, joining the group when they were still named The Primettes.

The group was completed by leading lady Diana Ross and Florence Ballard.

During Barbara’s time with The Supremes, the then-quartet signed with Motown records.

On their first album, 1962’s Meet The Supremes, Barbara sings on most of the tracks, but was not featured on the cover art – which is said to be because she was heavily pregnant at the time.

Notably Barbara sang the lead on The Supremes song After All in 1961, while her three bandmates sang backing vocals. But the song’s release was cancelled in favor of the radio hit Buttered Popcorn.

Martin left the group in spring 1961 after recording their first album.

She was not replaced and the musical act went on as a trio in coming years.
