Radio presenter Andy Bell, who was on the same train, joked: ‘I have an exclusive upgrade spot for you, this 1ft square bit of the carriage link.

‘Just a few feet from the toilet – you can smell but can’t reach.’

Graham Witcher commented: ‘You’re lucky, Jeremy Corbyn sat on the floor.’

However people were quick to point out this is standard fare for regular travellers.

One said: ‘That’s the life of a daily commuter.

Other social media users blasted the 26-year-old Conservative MP for blaming a rail company which the Government had recently nationalised.

Gary Spedding slammed: ‘You’re a Conservative MP… speak to your government ministers and ask them to invest in transport and rail infrastructure specifically.

‘You aren’t going to get sympathy when you’re propping up a government responsible for this transport mess.’

‘As this is the last service to Edinburgh for the night it is always a busy service.’
