A knife-wielding robber fled from a corner shop empty-handed after its shopkeeper threw chilli powder in his face.   

The masked thug was sent packing after he targeted the A1 Convenience Store, in Kingstanding, Birmingham, just before it closed at 10.30pm on Saturday.

CCTV shows the offender, dressed head-to-toe in black with a balaclava on his head, brandishing a large blade before the manager showers him in orange chilli powder. 

A hero shopkeeper at the A1 Convenience Store, in Kingstanding, Birmingham, repelled a knife-wielding robber by hurling a handful of chilli powder in his face on Saturday 

The video begins with the thug standing in the corner of the shop as he demands cash from the manager. 

A knife can clearly be seen in his right hand as he approaches the till.

But after a few seconds of talking, the shop’s manager hurls a handful of the eye-watering spice in the face of the crook.

It had been kept in a box under his counter.

The stunned man stumbles back as he is engulfed in an orange cloud of the chilli powder and he then dashes from the store in a panic.

The store owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, has released the footage in a bid to highlight the crime but has not reported the matter to police.

As a result, West Midlands Police have declined to comment.
