Married At First Sight’s Mishel Karen reveals her $40,000 debt from the show – and claims producers ‘pressured’ her into staying with Steve Burley when she wanted to leave

Mishel Karen was left with more than just a broken heart after Married At First Sight.

The mother-of-two, 49, told the Not Here To Make Friends podcast on Wednesday that she was also $40,000 in debt thanks to the show.

Mishel explained she was left out of pocket after tearing her meniscus while skiing on her honeymoon with ‘husband’ Steve Burley.

‘I had the injury on the snowfield, so I tore my meniscus and had to have surgery and all up I’m in debt about $38,000,’ she said.

‘It’s massive. I’m a single mum, I’ve paid for my kids to grow up, private school fees, this is a big dent.’

Mishel said she wasn’t the only contestant to rack up debts thanks to MAFS, but refused to name names.

Later in the podcast, Mishel revealed what really went on behind the scenes at last Sunday’s commitment ceremony.

During the tense episode, Steve voted to leave because he wasn’t physically attracted to his ‘wife’.

But Mishel chose to stay in the experiment, claiming that her teenager daughter had convinced her Steve was worth fighting for.

But Mishel disputed this, saying she’d actually wanted to leave but was ‘pressured’ by producers to change her mind.

‘Basically it was eight hours of delayed production, everyone was waiting for the commitment ceremony and it was them convincing me to write stay,’ she said.

‘They Steve was going to write leave and I think our characters hadn’t finished our roles yet.’
