Two people shouting Islamist slogans are arrested after smashing a car into Barcelona Airport

  • Vehicle drove into Barcelona airport’s terminal one on Friday morning
  • Two car occupants, both Albanian, shouted Islamist slogans, said police chief
  • Police bomb squad confirmed there were no explosives in the vehicle

Two people shouting Islamist slogans have been arrested after they smashed a car into Barcelona’s airport. 

No explosives were found in the vehicle, believed to be a grey Renault Megane, which was driven into El Prat airport’s terminal one at around 5am today.

Regional police chief Eduard Sallent told a news conference that investigators have not ruled out any theories over the drivers motives. Both were from Albania.

No injuries have been reported due to the incident. 

Spain remains in a state of emergency due to coronavirus as authorities grapple to contain the pathogen. It is the second worst affected country in Europe.

The airport has seen many flights cancelled or re-scheduled due to the outbreak. 

There were flights to Amsterdam due to depart at 6am, according to the airport’s website, a flight to Paris at 6.35am and flights to Las Palmas at 6.45am.
