An inmate at New York’s Rikers Island jail gouged his eye out in front horrified corrections officers this weekend.

The unidentified man, lodged at the Anna M. Kross Center at Rikers, which has a Methadone detoxification unit, gouged his eye out as the corrections officers begged him to stop, say sources.

The officer moved in and held his upper body and then rushed him on a gurney to a prison clinic for mental observation.

His eye, still attached to the optic nerve, was reinserted by doctors, the sources said, but the inmate, somehow with possibly a plastic fork, gouged his eye out a second time.

The horrific episode was told by sources to the Daily News.

The news outlet reported that a reporter viewed an image of the inmate lying on a medical bed with his eyelids closed.

The news outlet’s reporter also viewed a second image of the inmate’s eyeball inside a cup held by a hand wearing a blue surgical glove.

A spokesperson from the city’s Department of Corrections was not immediately available when DailyMail.com reached out for more information.

The corrections department runs 11 inmate facilities, 8 of which are located on Rikers.

During Fiscal Year 2018, the Department handled over 49,000 admissions and managed an average daily inmate population of approximately 8,900 individuals.
