Peers to be paid ‘£160 just for clicking a button’ under remote-voting plans from House of Lords officials

  • House of Lords peers to get £162 a day for voting online by touching a button
  • Peers are not even being encouraged to return to Westminster after Whitsun
  • Conservative MP says the public will be rightly outraged if the plan is agreed

House of Lords officials have been accused of preparing to pay peers ‘just for clicking a button’ under remote-voting plans.

Peers, who unlike MPs are not being encouraged to return to Westminster after Whitsun, would get £162 – half their usual daily allowance – for voting online.

Sources said the plan was set to be discussed by the House of Lords Commission.

Tory MP Henry Smith condemned the idea, telling The Mail on Sunday: ‘It is unacceptable that Lords should be paid just for voting remotely. The public will be rightly outraged if this is agreed.’

Last night, a Lords spokesman said no such remote-voting plan had yet been approved.
