MasterChef fans unimpressed by Reynold Poernomo’s dish

‘Looks like an oil spill!’ MasterChef viewers are less than impressed by Reynold Poernomo’s Japanese kingfish dish – as the ‘Dessert King’ LOSES against Callum Hann

MasterChef’s Reynold Poernomo was quickly dubbed the ‘Dessert King’ by fans.

And during the savoury round for Monday night’s Heats Week challenge, it was clear the 26-year-old was outside his comfort zone.

Losing against Callum Hann, 31, viewers were unimpressed by his Japanese-inspired kingfish tartare with a rice wine vinegar and ‘scallop silk’.

‘Reynold’s dish looks like an oil spill,’ one fan of the show posted on Twitter.

Another said: ‘Callum’s dish 10/10, Reynold’s 3/10,’ followed by one who wrote: ‘Callum has served a meal. Reynold has served a weird potpourri.’

‘Yes Reynold. THAT LOOKS TERRIBLE,’ one added.

However, it wasn’t all negative, with some ‘amazed’ by his culinary skills.

‘I am amazed. Is there anything Reynold can’t do?’ one wrote, as well as: ‘Reynold’s disappointment in his presentation would be a delight for us, if any of us had plated that up!’

During judging, Andy Allen got straight to the point, telling Reynold where he had missed the mark.

‘I like the flavours, no getting around that. I think the balance is a little bit out. You spent so much time on that scallop silk and it’s just disappointing because it doesn’t add a heap to the dish,’ he said.

Callum was victorious during round two, impressing the judges with his mandarin-infused duck noodle dish.

Judge Jock Zonfrillo said of the dish: ‘Nothing cold have prepared me for the flavour bomb that’s in that bowl. Every single mouthful was absolutely amazing.

‘The broth itself, the master stock, huge amounts of volumes of aromatics and flavours – the star-anise, the cinnamon – everything you packed in there was fantastic.

‘But most importantly, it reeked of mandarin. It reeked and it was such a joy to eat. So thank you.’

Callum will compete in the immunity challenge later this week, after the conclusion of ‘Heats Week’.

Brendan Pang lost out on round one, failing to hit the mark with his chicken dish.
