Eliminated Reece Hignell shares who he believes will win MasterChef

‘Come on guys, it’s just a competition!’ Eliminated Reece Hignell questions why everyone is ‘so emotional’ on MasterChef – and shares who he believes will win

Reece Hignell was eliminated from MasterChef Australia: Back To Win on Sunday.

And when it came time for the 28-year-old to leave the show, he realised why other contestants had become so emotional when eliminated in the past.

Speaking on The Project on Monday, he said: ‘I was actually thinking, why is everyone so emotional, come on, guys, it is just a competition!

‘And I watched me get eliminated and I was nearly a wreck myself! So I think, like, we all just want it so bad. I know I wanted to win so, so badly.’

He added: ‘I wanted to walk away with this beautiful crown saying that I was the champion but I didn’t get that and I was so close, so I think that is why I was a bit upset’.

As for who he thinks will win, Reece has a clear favourite in Emelia Jackson.

‘I’ve decided that I want Emelia to win and I have a very strong reason why,’ Reece told The Project.

‘I have a cake business, she has a cake business, so if she wins I can claim that as a win for a cake maker as well!’

The vegan chef was eliminated on Sunday night when his starter of beetroots with hazelnut, chocolate and goat’s cheese with a lemon myrtle vinaigrette failed to impress.

Upon his elimination, Reece looked genuinely shocked and upset, his voice breaking and on the verge of tears as he spoke.

‘For me, like, I just love everyone in this room,’ he said, looking around, clearly emotional.

‘It just means a lot to me. So, overall, this experience just means the world to me!’ Reece added tearfully, before wishing his fellow contestants goodbye.

‘I’m heartbroken. It’s a sad, sad moment, but it’s something that I can just reflect on now and really appreciate what I’ve done since being here,’ he added.

MasterChef continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel Ten
