Natalie Portman talks playing The Mighty Thor and confirms filming will start in Australia

Natalie Portman is opening up about playing The Mighty Thor in the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios movie Thor: Love and Thunder.

The 39-year-old actress revealed at San Diego Comic-Con almost exactly a year ago that she will return as Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder, where she will become The Mighty Thor, following a 2015 comic book arc where Foster wields the mystical hammer Mjolnir and becomes The Mighty Thor.

Portman also confirmed in an Instagram Live chat with tennis legend Serena Williams on Saturday that filming is slated to begin in Australia in early 2021, with a February 11, 2022 release date currently in place.

Portman was asked about becoming the new Thor by Williams, who said the Marvel Cinematic Universe was her ‘favorite thing.’

‘She’s actually The Mighty Thor. The comics had the female Thor where Jane becomes Thor, and she’s The Mighty Thor, Natalie clarified.

When asked if she’s started shooting yet, Portman said they haven’t started yet, which gives her more time to get in shape.

‘We haven’t started. More time to get jacked. Which I have not. I’ve got the carbo-loading down, but not the exercise part,’ Portman joked.

Williams added that while she loves the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she still hasn’t seen last year’s Avengers: Endgame, because *SPOILER ALERT* Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) dies in the film, and he doesn’t die in the comics.

‘I’m super excited. We’re shooting in Australia in the beginning of next year,’ adding she thinks she will be bringing her kids, nine-year-old Aleph and three-year-old Amalia with her.

‘I think. Obviously everything is weird because of pandemic time, who knows what’s happening, but the plan is for all of us to go,’ she said.

She also added, ‘It will be exciting and I’m interested to see if I can gain muscle’ for the movie.

Portman also added that Tessa Thompson‘s character Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok, is her favorite Marvel character.

‘Major love for that woman,’ Portman said of Thompson, who will also appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Portman made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2011’s Thor as Jane Foster, a scientist who became Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) love interest.

She returned in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, though she did not star in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok.
