Normal People’s Paul Mescal looks relaxed as he steps out for coffee… before Emmy nominated star is left red-faced after sleeping through Radio 1 interview

Paul Mescal stepped out for coffee on Thursday morning, hours before sleeping through an alarm and almost missing his Radio 1 interview with Zoe Ball.

The actor, 24, is still on a high after receiving a surprise nomination at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards for his work in BBC Thee drama Normal People, an adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel.

But he got his day off to a relaxing start by visiting an east London cafe, where she picked up some breakfast before making his way home.

The actor was braced for a busy afternoon that would culminate with a performance alongside Dermot Kennedy at London’s Natural History Museum later that evening.

But Mescal’s exuberant celebrations resulted in him partially sleeping through his Radio 1 Breakfast Show interview with Ball the following day.

Calling into the show from home sometime later, the apologetic star said: ‘I’m so embarrassed, I haven’t missed a single interview for however long… I’m so so sorry.’

While Ball immediately forgave Mescal, who was being interviewed after performing with Dermot Kennedy at London’s Natural History Museum on Thursday evening, he admitted the last week may well have caught up with him.

‘It’s been a little bit nuts and it probably is the reason that I’m up a little bit late,’ he said. ‘I’ve slept through my alarm a little bit.’

Mescal’s nomination in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie comes as Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones was overlooked in the category for Outstanding Lead Actress.

He said: ‘Getting to work with Daisy on a daily basis is totally and utterly the highlight of my career to date and I imagine that’ll be the case for a long long time.

‘And I totally share what happened to me this week with her because she is just an extraordinary human being and an extraordinary talent.’
