Appearing on This Morning on Monday, transgender TV presenter India, 53, said the government should put up barbed wire in order to control the situation.

On Thursday, 235 people were brought ashore, a record number for a single day.

More than 650 have arrived so far in August, including babies and unaccompanied children.

India said: ‘Thank God for Nigel Farage! I’ll say it. The fact the French are escorting them over is awful. We’ve got Brexit and we’re leaving the EU.

‘We should take control. I think it’s £100million we’ve spent on this problem. I’d go down the Trump route.

‘Why not have a nice spikey barbed wire fence somewhere on the channel? Instead of using the English channel, they should use the legal channel.’

She continued: ‘I’m not against immigration, I’m all for it. But illegally, it’s ludicrous. It’s out of hand and people are fed up.

TV host Matthew Wright said: ‘We’ve helped draft the UN guidelines on refugees and if people don’t feel safe and want to come to this country, they are allowed to do so.’

India added: ‘Not illegally though.’

Meanwhile, UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has said the Royal Navy could be called in to prevent boats reaching U.K. waters, though other senior officials and politicians say that would be impractical and potentially dangerous because small boats could capsize if they are forced back to the French shore.

Human rights groups have criticized the British government´s harsh rhetoric and said asylum-seekers should be given safe routes to reach the U.K.

And following India’s words on Monday, This Morning viewers took to Twitter to slam her words, calling her unsympathetic to the plight of migrants.
