Australian singer Delta Goodrem has revealed she was unable to control her speech, following complications after the removal of her salivary gland.

On Sunday, the 35-year-old surprised fans when she shared the heartbreaking story on her social media channels. 

In a video dated October 2018, Delta reveals she woke up from surgery to discover that she was unable to talk following complications, which led to a paralysis of a nerve in her tongue.

Documenting the process and now sharing it with her followers, an emotional Delta is seen telling the camera, ‘I’m taking this as a rebirth thing and that’s what it means, a rebirth.’ 

Unbeknownst to her fans, the singer went into months of rehabilitation with daily speech therapy, in order to get her speech back while living in Sydney. 

When a nerve is damaged there is no predicting when, or if it may ever recover.

‘I’m super embarrassed, I’m just over it! I’m just trying to stay positive,’ she says in one clip.

‘My livelihood is my sound… I’m trying to decide whether this is getting any better or not. It doesn’t feel like it.’

‘I wanted to share my story and say why I hadn’t had music out for so long and why this song, (Paralyzed), and why I wrote it,’ she explains in another piece to camera.

Almost two years later, Delta explained, ‘I share this with you as an artist sharing where the poetry in this song comes from and as a human who deeply feels and understands that everyone has their own story and their own challenges.’

‘You never know what someone is going through and this is an extremely hard time for people.

‘So I send this story to you with the message of hope and love,’ she concluded.

Whilst 2020 has seen the world go through unprecedented times, for Delta, it’s been a year that has seen her release the first two singles from her forthcoming sixth studio album, Keep Climbing and Paralyzed. 

Previously speaking to Daily Mail Australia about Keep Climbing, Delta explained it was about ‘reminding  people to not be afraid to find their strength’.

‘[It’s about being able] to find that part in you to keep climbing and to continue to believe that it will lead you to that next moment in your life,’ she continued.
