Shocking moment ‘road rage’ driver sends pedestrian flying over hedge before crashing his car into a lamp post as police launch attempted murder probe

Shocking video captures the moment a driver appeared to drive his car deliberately into a pedestrian to send the victim flying over the hedge after a street bust-up that has sparked a police attempted murder investigation. 

The victim, a man in his 40s, is seen walking down the street in Burgess Hill, West Sussex before a car comes crashing into him in the alleged road rage attack. 

The suspect then got out of his car and punched the man in the face before fleeing the scene.

Police confirmed a man had been arrested and was being questioned for attempted murder.

The footage starts off showing the two men speaking before one man gets into his car and reverses along the street. 

When the car is next seen on camera, it is seen reversing into a side road and appearing to turn round.

But moments later the car accelerates and collides with the victim, which sends him flying over the hedge. The car crashes into a post and the victim is attacked again.  

The victim was pictured standing in the hedge with blood down his face after the attack.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘A verbal altercation between two men occurred in Wyvern Way around 12.15pm today.

‘One of the men then got into his vehicle and drove his car at the other man, colliding with him before colliding into a road sign. 

‘The suspect got out of his vehicle and punched the man in the face before fleeing from the scene.

‘The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered multiple serious injuries and has been taken to hospital. Shortly afterwards, officers located the suspect nearby and he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody at this time.’

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Colin Garman said: ‘The victim has sustained multiple injuries and has been left, understandably, shaken by the incident. 

‘Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to assist our investigation is asked to report it to us either online or call 101 quoting Operation Burwell.’

Neither of the men involved has been named by police.
