Nicole Kidman reveals she was ‘happily married’ to Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman has recalled the fond memories she made with then-husband Tom Cruise on the set of their 1999 erotic thriller, Eyes Wide Shut.

Kidman revealed in an interview with The New York Times that she was ‘happily married’ to Cruise at the time of shooting, and would even go go-kart racing with him at 3AM after filming scenes. 

Despite playing a married couple grappling with infidelity, Kidman, 53, insisted their roles did not interfere in their own relationship.

‘We were happily married through that,’ she explained. ‘We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.’

Filming occurred over the course of two years, meaning Kidman and Cruise were living together primarily on a trailer during that time.

But despite their cramped quarters, the couple enjoyed their time together, which included occasional guest, director Stanley Kubrick

‘We had two kids and were living in a trailer on the lot primarily, making spaghetti because Stanley liked to eat with us sometimes,’ she said. ‘We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set.’

Initially, the couple only planned on working on the film for three months.

‘It turned into a year, a year and a half. But you go, As long as I surrender to what this is, I’m going to have an incredible time,’ she explained. 

Kidman centered her life around her home and work life after marrying Tom in 1990 at age 23.   

‘Because I was married at 23 years old, I wasn’t going to parties or I wasn’t going out a lot,’ she told Today in 2018. ‘I was pretty much at home. I had my first child at 25 and I was a married — I was in a family. So my sense of being in the world was — I was working, or I was at home.’ 

Kidman and Cruise married in 1990 after meeting on the set of their sports action film, Days Of Thunder.

They share daughter Isabella Jane, 27, and son Connor Cruise, 25.

In addition to Eyes Wide Shut, the couple starred in the film Far and Away during their marriage, once again playing each other’s love interests.  

After their divorce in 2001, the couple remarried.

Cruise went on to wed Katie Holmes, whom he has now divorced, while Kidman has been married to country singer Keith Urban since 2006.

They share daughters Sunday, 12, and Faith, nine.
