‘He didn’t have anybody’: Sia, 44, reveals she adopted her teenage son after forming an ‘instant connection’ by seeing him in a documentary

Sia has revealed she first saw her teenage son on a television documentary before tracking him down and adopting him.

Speaking in the October issue of Vogue Australia, the 44-year-old singer said she was ‘touched’ by the young man’s story and the fact he didn’t have anybody.

‘I am obsessed with reality television and documentaries, and I watched a documentary and saw my son,’ she explained.

Sia said she felt an ‘instant connection’ with the teenager when it was revealed he didn’t have a family of his own.

‘I was like, “What? Like, he doesn’t have anybody? Oh my God. I’m going to find him and I’m going to be his mummy,”‘ she said.

‘And so that’s what I did.’

Sia, whose real name is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, announced in May that she had adopted two boys last year. They were both 18 years old at the time and are now 19.

The Cheap Thrills hitmaker revealed in late June that one of her sons had recently became a father, making her a grandmother at the age of 44.

Reflecting on her motherhood journey, the Adelaide native told Vogue: ‘It’s one of the hardest, but I have obviously such an overflow of love that I could definitely see myself doing it [adopting] again, but not for a while.’

The Chandelier star has not revealed her sons’ names or any details about their private lives beyond the fact that one is a father and one appeared in a documentary.

She explained in an interview with DJ Zane Lowe on his Apple Music podcast earlier this year that her adopted sons, who are black, had made her more aware of racial prejudice in the United States.

‘I’m embarrassed that it took me to adopt two black sons to really understand what they go through on a daily basis,’ she said.

She admitted she was ‘very scared’ for her children, and had to show tough love to the teenagers when they weren’t being transparent with her.

‘I’d say, “I’m doing this because I’m your mother. I love you,”‘ she said.

Sia also recalled one emotional conversation she had with her children, in which she told them: ‘I don’t want to see you in prison.

‘With your history and the colour of your skin, I don’t want to see you as that five percent that ends up in prison for life. I don’t want that for you.’
