Schoolboy, 10, dies five days after falling and hitting his head in the playground

A 10-year-old schoolboy has died five days after falling and hitting his head in the playground. 

Police are investigating after Yasir Hussain was fatally injured at Leigh Primary School in Washwood Heath, Birmingham.

He was understood to have become unwell after being taken home and was rushed to hospital.

He died from his injuries in hospital yesterday, five days after the fall on Thursday, November 12.

Leigh headteacher Stephanie Prince said Yasir had a ‘real thirst for learning’.

She said in a statement: ‘We are all so desperately sad that one of our much-loved pupils has died following a tragic accident.

‘Yasir was quietly confident, hard-working, and determined to succeed.

‘He had a real thirst for learning and he loved playing with his friends. We all desperately miss him already.

‘All our thoughts are with Yasir’s family and friends, and we would respectfully request that their and our privacy is respected at this terribly difficult time.

‘We are providing all support possible to our pupils to help them cope with their loss.’

West Midlands Police officers have been investigating the incident and have been at the school interviewing staff and pupils.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: ‘A ten-year-old boy who suffered serious head injuries after falling at school on November 12, sadly passed away yesterday, November 17.

‘We are continuing to work with the school to investigate the circumstances leading to this tragic death.’

Floral tributes were left at the school today, with one note reading: ‘You have been my friend since reception but now you have gone and left us.’

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics were not called to the school.
