Amy Adams has responded to criticism over her new film Hillbilly Elegy, telling audiences the movie’s message is meant to ‘transcends politics.’
The Netflix film – adapted from a 2016 memoir of the same name – has been panned by critics for what they’ve called a caricatured depictions of poverty in rural Appalachia.
But Adams, 46, and castmate Glenn Close, 73, defended the Ron Howard project during a chat with NME, telling the site the movie is about much more than just the story at hand.

Asked if people who don’t agree with the film’s ‘politics’ can still enjoy the project, the two-time Golden Globe winner said: ‘I think the themes of this movie are very universal.
‘Whether it be generational trauma, whether it be just examining where we come from to understand where we’re going and who we are.
‘I think the universality of the themes of the movie far transcend politics.’
Close went on to explain how the movie was never intended to have a political edge.

Universal: ‘I think the themes of this movie are very universal,’ she said. ‘Whether it be generational trauma, whether it be just examining where we come from to understand where we’re going and who we are’
‘[It] wasn’t made with politics in mind, it was made with Ron’s intent,’ the revered actress said. ‘I think he succeeded magnificently to tell the story of a very specific family.’
But Amy wasn’t dismissing anyone’s personal opinion, telling NME she would ‘never would presume’ to tell critics what they ‘should or shouldn’t’ say.
‘Everybody has a voice and can use it how they choose to use it,’ she went on.
Since it premiered on November 11th (initially as a limited theatrical release), Hillbilly Elegy has earned a slew of negative reviews.

Richard Brody of the New Yorker was even more scathing, writing: ‘With his soupy, impersonal manipulations of memory and experience, void of the burrs that attach them to the world at large, Howard, whether intentionally or not, has made a libertarian’s fantasy.’
Hillbilly Elegy currently holds a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is available to stream now on Netflix.
