Talking about working with Mel, 45, for the first time after he was recommended to her by Rio Ferdinand, she said: ‘To be honest, well, that’s sort of when I came to meeting Mel and probably he saved me in many ways.

‘I was a skinny, anxious wreck, traumatised because of lots of reasons around the divorce.’

Reflecting on the difficult period, Kirsty added: ‘It’s much more complex than people know. There are things you keep private. And I think that Mel got to know me and what I’d been through and was amazing for me.’

The presenter also revealed how she stays motivated and balances her personal training sessions around her two sons.

She said: ‘Actually, what I do is I schedule my week, so I plan it all. So, I really try and make sure that I’ve got this sort of timetable of training around my work and the kids’ activities and stuff.

‘And that makes me feel better because I know I look at that and go, yeah, you’re already committing, aren’t you I think.’

Kirsty added that she gets ‘guilt’ and feels ‘out of control’ when she can’t fit in her busy exercise schedule.

She said: ‘Well, I think it’s like anyone and anyone’s life. If you’ve got really busy times and you’re up to your eye for whatever reason, or you’ve got stuff going on emotionally or your kids, there’s something, I think it’s that commitment, isn’t it?

‘And not letting that go because I do keep it all going. And I schedule my sessions.’

Kirsty added: ‘I’m very committed, If I feel like when one week is busier, I get this guilt thing… I know there’s nothing you can do because we can’t all have it all our own way all the time, but I hate that feeling.

‘It makes me feel out of control. That’s the hardest thing about being committed.’

The star spoke about the trauma of their ‘devastating’ break-up, admitting that it left her ‘grieving and mourning.’

Speaking to The Sun, the star outlined the heartbreaking effect that her divorce had on her, revealing that it left her ‘devastated’ and struggling to eat.

Kirsty, who was married to Paul between 2010 and 2015, told the publication: ‘The divorce was a very difficult period. I found it devastating.

The glamorous couple met in 1999 shortly after Paul had won his first cap for England and Kirsty was made the new face of Sky Sports News.

They married in 2010 in a £50,000 ceremony in Spain but their relationship started to wobble the following year after Paul’s retirement from rugby due to injury.

He went into a depression and did not know what to do with himself, a situation worsened by the fact he had failed to come to terms with his father’s death in 2004.
