Mulan villain Jason Scott Lee signs on to star in Disney Plus’ Doogie Howser reboot

After playing the villainous Bori Khan in the Mulan reboot, Jason Scott Lee is boarding another Disney reboot, Doogie Howser.

Lee, 54, has signed on to star alongside Peyton Elizabeth Lee in Disney Plus’ Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., according to Deadline. 

The actor, who was born in Los Angeles and raised in Hawaii, will play the father of Peyton Elizabeth Lee’s title character in the reboot, set in present-day Hawaii.

The show will follow Lahela ‘Doogie’ Kameāloha (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a 16-year-old mixed-race girl who juggles a ‘budding medical career’ with life as a typical teen.

Her Irish mother, Dr. Clara Hannon (Kathleen Rose Perkins), is also her boss, the Chief of Staff at the hospital Doogie works at.

Jason Scott Lee will play Doogie’s father, Benny Kameāloha, described as a Hawaiian ‘local boy’ who is struggling with the fact that his daughter is no longer his little girl.

Benny used to work in finance on the mainland, but returned home to his native Hawaii to focus on his family.

He now runs a shave ice flower truck, which allows him to be closer to all three of his children.

Kourtney Kang (How I Met Your Mother, Fresh Off the Boat) wrote the pilot script and will serve as an executive producer.

Also executive producing is Dayna Bochco and Jesse Bochco, the widow and son of the late Steven Bochco, who co-created the original Doogie Howser series with David E. Kelley.

The original series followed teenage prodigy Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris), a 16-year-old second-year resident at a Los Angeles hospital, whose father (James Sikking) runs a family medical practice.

The show also starred Max Casella as Doogie’s best friend Vinnie, Belinda Montgomery as Doogie’s mother and Kathryn Layng as Nurse Curly Spaulding.

Jason Scott Lee has a long history with Disney even before Mulan, playing Mowgli in the studio’s 1994 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book and voicing David Kawena in both Lilo & Stitch animated films.

He’ll next be seen in The Wind and the Reckoning, alongside Henry Ian Cusick and Jonathan Schaech.
