Kate Hudson on why all her partners have been musicians

Oscar nominee Kate Hudson and her two-year-old daughter Rani Rose wore matching Tee Shirt Palace smiley face T-shirts in a new spread styled by Julia von Boehm.

‘My quarantine has not been quiet. I need a quarantine from my quarantine,’ the 41-year-old daughter of Goldie Hawn joked in the March edition of InStyle, on newsstands February 12.

‘Everybody finds a silver lining in [lockdown] and a purpose throughout. I think it’s a positive thing. What do you really need, and what makes you happy?’  

Hairstylist Gregory Russell coiffed Kate’s flaxen locks and make-up artist Doniella Davy made sure she was ready for her close-up for the magazine shoot.

Little Rani’s father is Lightwave Records founder Danny Fujikawa, whom Hudson has been dating since 2016.

The Sibling Revelry podcaster has nine-year-old son Bingham from her three-year engagement to Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, which ended in 2014.

Kate is also mother to 17-year-old son Ryder from her six-year marriage to The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, which ended in 2007. 

‘I would like to say [musicians are] attracted to me,’ Hudson noted.

‘I’m attracted to musical people, period. From the outside, yeah, I get it. “Oh, I like a rock star,” or whatever. But that’s not really what it is.

‘The reason I connect so deeply with musicians is because we all connect to music in a way that you don’t have to explain. You just feel it, and it’s something you love…The lifestyle is not something to fall in love with!’

The Almost Famous alum’s attraction and suppressed singing talent stems back to her estranged father Bill Hudson, a musician who abandoned her and brother Oliver as children. 

‘He never was a father to me, so it was sort of like my way of rejecting that relationship,’ Kate explained. 

‘I lost sight of my confidence in singing and creating music when I was in my late 20s…I never really got to fulfill the part of me that’s probably my No. 1 passion.’

All of that changed when Hudson was cast as newly-sober drug dealer Zu in Sia Furler’s directorial debut Music, which hits US theaters on February 12 and UK theaters on February 15. 

‘For me personally, creating it with Sia was healing in so many ways,’ the Los Angeles native recalled. 

‘It was almost like someone giving me permission to say, “You’ve earned this opportunity to express yourself through this.” I’ve worked through it, and I feel more confident. Now I get excited about singing and I don’t have any expectations of what I want it to look like.’ 

The Australian 45-year-old replaced Shia LaBeouf with Kate after watching a 2016 Instagram video of her singing Judy Garland’s 1944 chestnut Have Yourself a Merry Christmas. 

‘”We’re going to get weird,”‘ Hudson remembers Sia telling her. 

‘”You’re going to shave your head, walk around with a sports bra on, bloody up your face, and smash your head into a wall.” As a creative person, I was like, “Yes.”‘

The Golden Globe winner went on to defend the controversial casting of Maddie Ziegler as her character’s autistic half-sister Music.   

‘Maddie worked so hard on this part and was so intricate and careful about how she was portraying this young autistic girl,’ Kate said. 

‘We read [about autism], we talked to people, we watched everything under the sun that could possibly take you through what that experience was.’

Music – based on a one-page story that Furler penned in 2007 – currently holds a dismal 29% critic approval rating (out of seven reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The musical drama also features Leslie Odom Jr., Juliette Lewis, Hector Elizondo, Tig Notaro, and Mary Kay Place.
