Neil Patrick Harris reacts to the gender-flipped Doogie Howser reboot: ‘I’m so happy’

More than 30 years after his breakthrough role in Doogie Howser M.D., Neil Patrick Harris is chiming in on the gender-flipped reboot, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.

The reboot was first announced in April, with Disney issuing a series order in December, with Peyton Elizabeth Lee cast as the 16-year-old title character.

Harris, 47, was promoting his HBO Max limited series It’s A Sin, debuting February 18, when he was asked by Variety what he thinks of the reboot.

The new series will be set in Hawaii, following Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha (Lee), a mixed-race 16-year-old girl juggling her teenage years with her new medical career.

When asked about his thoughts on the Disney Plus series, Harris replied, ‘I’m so happy.’  

‘The creator of it was a big producer on How I Met Your Mother (Kourtney Kang),’ Harris added, referring to his Fox series which ran for nine seasons.

‘I think setting it with a female protagonist is a great call… I think it’s in really good hands. I feel like it’s a passion project for many and I can’t wait to watch it,’ he said.

The original series ran four seasons from 1989 to 1993, created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley.

Howser played the title character with James Sikking playing his father, a doctor himself, and Belinda Montgomery playing his mother.

The rebooted series flips the switch on Doogie’s parents also, with her Irish mother Clara Hannon (Katherine Rose Perkins) also her boss as the Chief of Staff at the hospital.

Jason Scott Lee plays her ‘local boy’ Hawaiian father who used to work in finance on the mainland but returned home to Hawaii to be closer to family, and now runs a shaved ice flower truck.

The cast  is rounded out by Mapuana Makia as Noelani, a fellow resident alongside Lahela at the hospital.

Harris has a busy year lined up, with his limited series It’s a Sin just the first of his many projects.

He also stars in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, alongside Nicolas Cage (as himself), Pedro Pascal and Tiffany Haddish.

He also stars in Warner Bros.’ highly-anticipated The Matrix 4, which is slated for release December 22, 2021.
