Laura Byrne discusses moment controversial Celeb Spellcheck account turned ‘criminal’

The hugely popular Celeb Spellcheck Instagram account recently wiped their account clean after a series of salacious gossip posts and ongoing complaints from influencers and celebrities alike.

And on Tuesday, Bachelor stars Laura Byrne and Brittany Hockley addressed the apparent closure of the controversial page on their Life Uncut podcast.

Laura, 33, claimed the exponential growth and subsequent media attention the anonymous account was experiencing saw the mystery administrator ‘push the boundaries’ and ‘become criminal’ in its operations.

Celeb Spellcheck is believed to be run by a Melbourne PR professional with impeccable sources.

‘I have always found Celeb Spellcheck really funny, but the last couple of months Britt has been strongly against it and thinks that it is a very negative and toxic environment,’ Laura said, adding that she now agrees.’

‘I’m quite disappointed in the account now,’ Brittany, 33, said, explaining that its toxicity enabled trolling and bullying to continue and inadvertently encouraged its followers to spread hate.

‘Why do you [Celeb Spellcheck] get off on making people feel bad?’ Laura pondered out loud of the mystery administrator.

'It's a human being that is being targeted and the only intent behind the post is to embarrass, humiliate and cause toxic destructive behavior toward them': Both Brittany and Laura agreed the page's recent posts about Bachelor star Laurina Fleur and WAG Bec Judd had gone too far

‘It’s a human being that is being targeted and the only intent behind the post is to embarrass, humiliate and cause toxic destructive behavior toward them’: Both Brittany and Laura agreed the page’s recent posts about Bachelor star Laurina Fleur and WAG Bec Judd had gone too far

Both Brittany and Laura agreed that the page’s recent posts about Bachelor star Laurina Fleur and WAG Bec Judd had gone too far.

Laurina had been called out for snorting powder off a counter top during a party, while Bec had been accused of allegedly donating gifted clothing from a friend to a local charity shop.

‘It’s a human being that is being targeted and the only intent behind the post is to embarrass, humiliate and cause toxic destructive behavior toward the person that’s being posted about,’ Brittany said.

The women both agreed that as Laurina and Bec didn’t post about the alleged incidents themselves or encourage unlawful or destructive behaviour to their followers, the posts by Celeb Spellcheck were unnecessarily cruel.

‘Celeb Spellcheck has gone out of their way to humiliate… Go back to your roots, pay us out for the odd spelling mistake, but don’t make it to the point where it will affect someone’s mental health and their literal future,’ Brittany said.

Celeb Spellcheck began a few years ago as an account making fun of poor spelling on sponsored Instagram posts, but has since become a platform for holding influencers to account for their lies and irresponsible behaviour.

The profile is also a hub for user-submitted gossip.

Because of this, Celeb Spellcheck has drawn comparisons to DeuxMoi, the popular Instagram account that collects and dishes out unverified rumours about American celebrities from its almost 800,000 followers.

During an Instagram Q&A in February, the mystery administrator – who is believed to be in her twenties – noted that the likes of Sophie Cachia, Steph Claire Smith, Jadé Tuncdoruk and Tayla Damir had blocked her.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting any of these women, or indeed any of the people mentioned by name in this article, have leaked stories to Celeb Spellcheck.

Who is Celeb Spellcheck?

The Celeb Spellcheck admin has never revealed her name, but has offered bits of biographical information in her weekly Q&As, including that she is

  • a woman in her late twenties (she turned 28 in December)
  • works full-time in public relations
  • hails from the Mornington Peninsula but now lives in Melbourne’s south-east
  • is in a long-term relationship

In a message to their 144,000 followers last week, the mystery person behind the suspended account shut down rumours that they’re facing lawsuits or that their identity is on the brink of being exposed.

Instead, the unknown figure said that they were taking a break to figure out the future of the account.

‘I’m not being sued (that I know of, lol) and I’m not at risk of having my identity revealed,’ they wrote.

‘I will be taking a break while I think about the future of this account,’ they continued, adding that they would be back soon.
