Victorian Parliament is evacuated as politicians and staff are escorted to the car park

  • Politicians and media ordered out of the Spring St state government building
  • Three fire trucks rushed to the scene in response to the automated alarm call
  • Fire officers investigated  but found it was a false alarm and gave the all clear
  • Fire Rescue Victoria believe it was a faulty device that caused the call-out

Victoria’s Parliament was evacuated on Tuesday morning and MPs and staff were escorted to the car park to await further instruction.

As MPS, administration workers and media huddled together outside the Spring Street building, firemen investigated the cause of the alert.

MPs were later allowed to return inside after being given the all clear.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman later confirmed they had been called out after a faulty automated alarm went off in the building.

‘Three trucks attended,’ said an FRV spokesman. ‘We investigated the cause and it was a false alarm.

‘It seems like it was a fault in a [smoke detector] device rather than anything else. It was not as a result of any human activity.’

He added: ‘There was literally no smoke and no fire.’
