Noel Gallagher, 54, reveals how he enlisted help of Matt Smith for We’re On Our Way Now music video

‘I asked as he was leaving at 4am!’: Noel Gallagher reveals how he got good pal Matt Smith to appear in his music video… and admits he ‘f*****g hates’ starring in them ‘with a passion’

He’s been on the music scene for decades but he still doesn’t like the idea of videos for his songs, saying he ‘f*****g hates’ them ‘with a passion’.

But, luckily, it seems Noel Gallagher has become a bit of an expert at enlisting the help of his celebrity pals meaning he only has to appear for a few minutes.

And The High Flying Birds frontman, 54, has now explained how The Crown and Doctor Who star Matt Smith, 38, came to be in his We’re On Our Way Now video.

Flying high: Noel Gallagher, 54, has become a bit of an expert at enlisting the help of his celebrity pals to appear in his promos so he only has to for a few minutes

Noel told Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt’s Rockonteurs podcast: ‘I f*****g hate videos. I hate them with a passion.

‘I hate the fact they f*****g cost money. And I have to p**s around all day about in the rain with some director.’

He then explained that instead of having to do the whole video himself, he’ll tell his pals Scully and Dan: ‘I say “This is all I can afford, go and do what you can and I’ll be in it for 10 seconds.” If I can, I’ll blag another famous person to be in it for me.’

On his good pal Matt’s appearance, he added: ‘One night he was round our house and as he was leaving at four in the morning I said “Ey mate you don’t fancy being in a video do you?” He said “yeah no problem”. And I sort of held him to it.’

Admitting he doesn’t really know what’s happening in the video, Noel added: ‘The second video follows on from this one, so he’s [Matt] in the next one too’.

Matt stars in the video for We’re On Our Way Now which is from Noel’s latest album with High Flying Birds, Back The Way We Came: Vol 1 (2011-2021), which was released on Friday.

The Mancunian musician said he enjoys the creative process of writing songs, saying it’s his ‘meditation’.

And while he’s still a fan of working in the music business with his current band, he recently appeared to confirm he’ll never reunite with his old group Oasis.

He told MR PORTER recently: ‘You don’t really understand unless you’ve really been in it. Once you’ve quit, there is no going back. There’s no point in going back.

‘Bands are weird, you start off as young men and end up going all the way through to being middle-aged dads and all that goes with it.’

Noel decided to leave Oasis after Liam contracted laryngitis ahead of V Festival in August 2009, with the band cancelling the gig.

He issued a statement, blaming his brother for the cancellation, but cited Liam having a hangover as the reason.

Liam then sued Noel, demanding an apology, which he did – after which he quit the band, saying, ‘I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.’
