Seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes spent the past three years having a secret online ‘love affair’ with a woman he never met, he has sensationally admitted.

The racing car legend, 47, would send cringeworthy loved-up messages to his mystery sweetheart until his wife Lara found out about the Instagram romance and briefly kicked him out of their house.

He is now warning others that social media can be an ‘evil thing’ and admitted he may have been the victim of ‘a catfish’, speaking to The Daily Telegraph.

Eventually the cringeworthy online love affair came unstuck

Before the virtual relationship came unstuck, Lowndes told the women ‘I’d rather be with you’ after discussing his marital troubles (pictured, left and right, their messages)

In the past few months Lowndes has been ‘getting help’ and says he is determined to make amends with his wife.

The couple are now even exploring the possibility of contacting police after being ‘tormented’ by the unknown woman.

But before the virtual relationship came unstuck, Lowndes told her ‘I’d rather be with you’ after discussing his marital troubles in Instagram messages.

‘I’d love to sit opposite you and look into your eyes and soul,’ he wrote in one message.

‘Wow that’s deep,’ she replied.

‘So is my love for you baby. I want to start to show that side of me … I want you to know how much I love you,’ Lowndes said.

Now, the V8 Supercar great says he’s ‘ashamed’ of the embarrassing ordeal.

‘Basically, I was in a bad place, but I’m not in that place anymore. I’m getting help. It is what it is, but I can honestly say Lara knows all about this and this third person is no longer in my life,’ Lowndes said.

He said he was lured in by the calculating woman who claimed to be a ‘big fan’.

She contacted him out of the blue and started their initial conversation when he ‘mentally wasn’t in a good place’.

Mrs Lowndes said the situation has been ‘rough’ but she is sticking by her husband and that the two are once again living together under the same roof.
