Chelsea are preparing to offer Mason Mount a bumper new contract that will bring him in line with the club’s highest earners, according to reports.

Mount, a product of Chelsea’s highly-regarded youth system, became a first-team regular under Frank Lampard at the start of the 2019-20 season and has maintained that role since Thomas Tuchel arrived.

It’s believed the 22-year-old earns around £75,000 per week at Stamford Bridge, which is relatively low compared to other members of the squad who share a similar prominence in Tuchel’s plans.

According to Goal, the Blues are preparing to hold talks with the England midfielder and offer him a new wage that would bring him into line with the club’s top earners.

There has been no formal offer from Chelsea yet with the club currently working on new contracts for defensive trio Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Trevoh Chalobah.

It’s claimed that while Mount loves the club and would not hesitate in committing his future to Chelsea, he does recognise that he should be paid a similar wage to the likes of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.

Havertz is believed to earn around £150,000 per week, while his fellow German Werner takes home around £250,000 per week.

Mount has made 116 first-team appearances for Chelsea so far in his promising career, scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists.

He assisted Havertz’s winner in last season’s Champions League final victory over Manchester City and started every knockout game from the quarter-finals onwards.

Mount’s form last season saw him win Chelsea’s player of the year prize and it is reported his nickname in the dressing room is ‘star boy’ as he continues to impress his team-mates.

Mount is also critical for Gareth Southgate with England and featured heavily at last summer’s European Championship, where the Three Lions were beaten finalists.

Earlier this month Mount was also included among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or.

There were questions at the beginning of this season about whether Mount was playing at full pelt or if there was any lingering effect from a draining summer with England.

In recent weeks the sharpness has returned and he insists he has not been suffering a hangover from the tournament.

‘After an experience like that and how far we got, it does take some time to get over it and reflect,’ said Mount while on international duty.

‘But as soon as the next season starts, that’s behind you. Maybe physically there can still be a toll, even though you’ve had a break.

‘So it’s natural that happens and after playing many games in the normal season, then to go to the Euros and play games, and then after a short break go straight into pre-season, it can take a toll. Maybe I’ve felt that a bit this season.

‘I missed a week with a little injury at Chelsea but to get back and be in the England squad, that little break makes you feel more energetic and gives you that little boost. I don’t want to miss any game but it does help sometimes to take a step back and let yourself recover.’

On the Ballon d’Or nomination, he added: ‘Growing up, you look at the Ballon d’Or and how that is the top of the top from a personal view.

‘To be in the top 30 in the world at the moment is a dream come true and it’s special to be among names I’ve looked up to as a kid. It shows you can never stop working hard.’
