‘I would hate for her to feel sad and not know why’: Ed Sheeran reveals his fears over daughter Lyra, 14 months, suffering from depression as mental health issues run in his family

Ed Sheeran has revealed he would ‘hate’ for his daughter to suffer from depression as he spoke about how mental health issues run in his family.

Appearing on a Swedish TV show, the singer, 30, who is proud dad to 14-month-Lyra, talked about his fears she will grow up to experience the ‘real lows’, which he can relate to.

‘I don’t want her to have the ability to have real lows. I would hate for her to have that. I know she will, as it runs in my family. But I would hate for her to feel sad and not know why,’ Ed said.

Ed announced the birth of his first daughter with his wife Cherry back in September 2020.

The singer went on to admit being lockdown affected his mental health in a bad way and he stopped working as a result. The Shape Of You hitmaker later realised making music was the most helpful thing he could do to help his troubles.

He said: ‘I just got sad. Any major thing that happens in my life, the most positive thing I can do from that is write a song.’

Ed has previously spoken out about his addictive personality and that he could relate to Elton John’s autobiography Me.

The singer said that he does not see the point in having only the one drink, much like his pal Elton back when he was binging on both alcoholic beverages and food.

He said: ‘I have a very addictive personality. Very, very addictive personality. I’m reading Elton John’s book at the moment and there are so many things that he did that I do.

‘He would be like, “I would just go on an ice cream binge and eat four f****** desserts until I throw it up”, and I was like, “I’ve done that before”

‘Or his martini binges, where he sees how many he can drink. And I’m like, “I’ve done that before too”‘.

He went on: ‘I see no point in having a glass of wine. I’d rather have two bottles. He ends up getting really f****** sad and depressed and all of these things can add to that.’

Back in 2019, Ed touched upon how fame has given him crippling anxiety and caused him to close down his social circles and get rid of his phone.

In an interview with The Sun in 2019, Ed admitted he found it difficult when people constantly snapped photos of him in public, making him feel ‘not human and like a ‘zoo animal’.

He said: ‘It makes me feel like I’m not human. But what instantly cuts me off is that you’re having a moment with them which is so genuine and so nice and then at the end they ask for a picture.

‘Like if I am eating in a restaurant now, I would prefer to have a private room because if I eat in the public room I have people filming me while I’m eating my food.

‘You feel like a zoo animal. I don’t mean to complain, I have a cool job and life. But I just want to avoid that.’
