ATM scam warning as worried passers-by uncover metal bar and glue trap blocking money at well-used cashpoint

  • Video shows a metal bar and tape used to trap money inside a London cashpoint
  • One man nearly lost £130 in the scam until passers-by pulled away the metal bar
  • Last year, £28 million was stolen by scammers using ATM machines in the UK

A shocking video shows a group of people uncovering a metal bar and glue used by scammers to trap money inside a well-used cashpoint.

Footage shows the group examining the metal bar that had been pried out of the ATM machine.

In the video footage, one man exclaims, ‘Here £130, I got it look’, before the camera focuses on the metal bar that was blocking him from getting his money.

A woman can be heard saying: ‘It’s got a f*****ing mouse sticker on it, it’s taking the p**s.’

Footage shows the man finally able to retrieve his £130 cash, which was being trapped inside the ATM machine by a metal bar glued with sticky tape

According to Natalie Sykes, who filmed the video, the man had fallen for the trap and almost lost his money until passers-by came to his aid.

She said: ‘The metal bar covered in sticky tape was over the part the money came out of, we managed to pry it off so the man didn’t lose his money.’

The video was filmed on Thursday night, October 21, outside the Shell garage in Portland Road, South Norwood, south London.

Cashpoint scams are a major issue which cost the British public millions of pounds each year. In 2020 alone, over £28 million was stolen by scammers using ATM machines.

According to the Met Police, if cash machines don’t look or feel right, then it is best to steer clear from them and use those inside banks.

Scammers have previously used pinhole cameras to spy on pin codes and card readers inside ATM machines to defraud people out of their money.
