Gladys Berejiklian wears $1,000 heels as she heads to her Sydney office carrying a cake on Melbourne Cup day after ‘extremely difficult’ ICAC grilling

Former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has put her tough questioning at a corruption inquiry to one side, as she donned a designer ensemble and carried a cake to her office on Melbourne Cup day.

The 51-year-old, who suddenly quit as premier last month because she was being investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), had a spring in her step as she stepped out in Sydney wearing a chic outfit worth at least $1,150.

Just a day after she made an apparent farewell to public life following a grilling at an ICAC inquiry, Ms Berejiklian smiled for photographers as she left her home and headed to her office, as she remains the MP for the North Shore seat of Willoughby.

Ms Berejiklian, who clutched a boxed cake, looked chic in a bright red polka-dot dress and black blazer.

She teamed the spring look with pricey accessories, including Salvatore Ferragamo wedged heels, which cost about $1,000.

She carried her belongings in a black TSD12 bag, which retails for $150, and completed her look with a pair of designer sunglasses on a bright Sydney day.

On Monday, Berejiklian seemed to bid a sombre farewell to public life as she briefly  addressed media after a long day of questioning by the corruption watchdog.

The former NSW Premier said the past month had been ‘extremely difficult’ for her, but that everything she’d done was in the public interest.

‘I just want to say to everybody it’s been my honour and privilege to serve you in my role in public life,’ she said.

‘What’s occurred to me is a difficult situation but I know many people do it tough in the community.

‘I intend to get on with my life and I just want to thank everybody for my support every day I’ve dealt with the public.

‘It’s been my honour and privilege to serve the community.’

The corruption inquiry into Ms Berejiklian centres on her secret love affair with Daryl Maguire who stood down as an MP after a finding that he had received corrupt payments while serving in parliament.

During a fiery morning of questioning, which was telecast live, Ms Berejiklian said she was unaware of any corrupt activity while their relationship continued.

At the centre of the evidence heard were SMS messages she’d received from Mr Maguire in July 2018, demanding she get a second phone and download a Chinese messaging app.

Ms Berejiklian told the ICAC that she did not have a second phone, and never sought to get one.

She said she completely rejected the proposition that her secret relationship with Mr Maguire affected the way she carried out her public duties.

‘That was always separate to my public responsibility… I stand by that ever so strongly,’ she said.
