Kelly Clarkson admits that she is ‘feeling alone’ and ‘plain sad’ during her holiday special

Kelly Clarkson admitted that she was ‘feeling alone,’ lost’ and ‘plain sad’ while appearing in her new holiday special, entitled Kelly Clarkson Presents: When Christmas Comes Around.

In a clip from the featurette, which originally aired on NBC on Wednesday night, the 39-year-old singer bared her feelings to the public while performing the track Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know).

The special aired during her ongoing divorce from her former husband, Brandon Blackstock, with whom she shares two children.

Baring it all: Kelly Clarkson admitted that she was ‘feeling alone,’ lost’ and ‘plain sad’ while appearing in her new holiday special, entitled Kelly Clarkson Presents: When Christmas Comes Around

Clarkson began her performance by expressing that she had dealt with strong emotions while penning the new track.

‘I’m gonna be real with y’all: When I wrote this next song, I was crying my face off, which happens even at Christmastime, everyone,’ she stated.

The American Idol winner then noted that she was partially inspired to pen the track after caring for her daughter River and son Remington, aged seven and five, respectively.

‘I had just put my kids to bed, and I was just going through it, having a really hard time,’ she stated.

The performer went on to express that she worked on the song in an effort to provide solace to individuals who may not be having the best Christmastime experiences.

‘It’s been a really tough year for a lot of us. And I wrote this song for me, but also because there aren’t many holiday songs for people feeling alone or lost or just plain sad,’ she said.

She did point out that one notable exception was ‘Dolly Parton’s classic Hard Candy Christmas, which we all love.’

Clarkson then belted out the track with the backing of an orchestra, and she notably took an emotional pause just before the end of the song.

The singer and Blackstock initially began their relationship in 2011, and they were first reported to have been dating the following year.

The two went on to announce their engagement in December of 2012, the same year they made their public debut as a couple.

Clarkson and Blackstock eventually tied the knot during a wedding ceremony that was held in Tennessee in 2013.

The hitmaker announced that she was pregnant in November of that year, and she gave birth to River Rose the following year.

The former couple expanded their family with the addition of Remington in 2016.

However, Clarkson and Blackstock announced that they were splitting up and preparing to divorce in 2020.

The two were declared legally single this past August, and they are expected to finalize their divorce next year.

The singer spoke out about her divorce during an interview on Sunday Today, where she told Willie Geist that she had felt compelled to speak out about her divorce.

‘I don’t know how people go through that without having some kind of outlet because it is the worst thing ever for everyone involved,’ she said.

Clarkson added that her deteriorating marital situation had placed a strain on her in the recent past.

She noted that ‘it’s no secret. My life has been a little bit of a dumpster…personally, it’s been a little hard the last couple months.’
