  • Fans on social media soon pounced to mock the former striker’s obvious words

The Champions League draw on Monday will long be remembered as one of the UEFA’s biggest blunders but that didn’t prevent Michael Owen from escaping ridicule.

In the draw for the last-16, the procedure in Nyon, Switzerland quickly turned into a farce after Manchester United were selected to face Villarreal – a draw not allowed given they had played them in the group stage.

But the situation soon became more chaotic when organisers failed to put United in the pot to face Atletico Madrid and instead included their own group rivals Liverpool.

UEFA were forced to re-draw the Champions League last-16 ties after a technical error

UEFA voided the draw before commencing again later in the day, having blamed the initial embarrassing errors on a ‘technical problem with the software of an external service provider.’

BT Sport covered the event with former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United striker Owen providing live punditry.

But the 41-year-old was so taken aback by events he failed to offer much insight aside from stating the obvious ahead of the second draw.

Owen declared: ‘Everyone is going to have a better or a worse draw, unless you draw the same team.’

Albeit a harmless quip, social media soon reacted with amusement to the former England striker’s words.

Some fans used sarcasm as a form of pointing fun at Owen’s bland observation.

One said: ‘Only future generations will truly appreciate the genius of Michael Owen.’ while another added: He really is the modern day Socrates… A true thinker, a philosopher, a poet.’

Others meanwhile couldn’t hide their amusement at Owen’s obvious statement.

They said: ‘I was laughing thinking someone has to tweet this. He also said Liverpool could get a tougher tie like Atletico when they possibly couldn’t.’

Another added another obvious football observation, while quoting Owen: ‘In a game you can win or lose unless its a draw – Michael Owen.’
