Rundown three-bed Leicester home filled with trash sells for £160,000 OVER starting bid

A three-bed family home deemed too messy for its previous owner to live in sold for £179,000 after it went up for auction with a starting bid of just £20K.

The Leicester abode, which was described as a ‘fantastic renovation opportunity’, came with with gaps in upstairs floorboards, gigantic spiderwebs, missing windows, and a homemade chimney.

The property, which featured stained mattresses, rooms filled with clutter and peeling wallpaper, sold with a £160,000 mark-up this morning after 337 bidders were desperate to get their hands on the messy house.

When renovated, it is expected to be worth up to £225,000.

Jim Demitriou, the national valuer for SDL Property Auctions, said: ‘Usually properties have 3-15 bidders, anything more is considered a lot. 

‘This is the most interest we’ve had. We value properties in the hope we get people to bid on them, the lower the price, the more people will bid. 

‘The more people bidding drives the price up. If a home on that street was to be in great condition around there, it would sell for £200,000-£225,000.

‘The family auctioning it thought it would only sell for around £90,000 so it’s a huge mark-up for them.’

The previous owner was sent to hospital after a fall but the paramedics refused to let him back into the home because it was deemed unsafe for him to live in.

His niece put the property up for auction to help pay for his care after he was placed in assisted living.

Mr Demitriou continued: ‘All of the proceeds are going towards his care, the niece and her husband aren’t making a single penny off the sale.

‘It means his care will be taken care of and they don’t have to worry.

‘They can have a reasonably stress-free Christmas because they know he’s being looked after now.’

Although the property requires a deep clean, it is only 0.6 miles from Leicester Station, so the owner can be in the nation’s capital in one and a half hours.

Mr Demitriou added: ‘It’s a cultural spot in Leicester, there’s a lot of restaurants. I can’t say for certain what the new owner will do with it, as there were hundreds of bidders, but I imagine someone is going to buy it to live in.’
