NRL enforcer Steve Bowden buys huge beachside mansion in Brighton for $16.5million

One of rugby league’s toughest stars from the ’70s and early ’80s has snapped up a beachside mansion in Brighton, Melbourne, for $16.5million.

Steve Bowden played 76 career games for the Newtown Jets and famously missed out on the 1981 grand final after a brutal fight in the match prior in which he head-butted and repeatedly punched Manly’s Mark Broadhurst.

Bowden was revealed to be the buyer of 90 Esplanade in what is the latest property purchase for the current hotel magnate, reports realestate.com.au.

A game winner: Former NRL enforcer Steve Bowden has purchased a huge beachside mansion in Brighton, Melbourne, for $16.5million

Bowden’s name has been added to the title of the home after an off-market deal.

The property changed hands for $16.5m in 2020 but only settled at the end of November.

It is understood Bowden then bought the home in an unusual deal where he took over the purchase as a nominee after another party who initially bought it found another home they preferred.

In his most recent property dealings, Bowden sold his Wattle Ridge cattle farm in Bowral, NSW, for $13million earlier this year.

He also owned the Hurstville Ritz Hotel in Sydney, which he sold for $52million in 2007 and bought back for $30.5million in 2010.

He then sold it again, along with the Cabramatta Hotel which he also owned, for $90million in 2017.

Since retiring from rugby league, Bowden has worked as a hotel magnate and security for renowned Aussie boxer Danny Green.
