However Gerrard may have to wait until the summer to sign the midfielder, who is currently representing Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Bissouma will have just 12 months of his deal remaining at the Amex come the end of the season and it will represent the last opportunity Graham Potter’s side could secure a large transfer fee.

Gerrard though may have to also fight off interest from Liverpool and Arsenal for the defensive midfielder.

Meanwhile Olsen, previously of Everton, would not be seen as a direct replacement for Emiliano Martinez although will be expected to provide reasonable competition for the the Villa No 1.

Although the move will see him command fewer first team chances than at Bramall Lane, he is seen as an important part of Villa’s rebuild under Gerrard.

Olsen’s credentials as a Sweden international with experience is also likely to see him as a significant upgrade to current reserve Villa keepers Jed Steer and Viljami Sinisalo.
