David Beckham has revealed that he loves to play with Lego because it ‘helps him relax’.

The former footballer and father-of-four, 47, told how he will even stay up until 4am sometimes as he gets so engrossed in the hobby.

David made the revelation during a chat on the River Café Table 4 podcast where he told how his other ways of relaxing included cooking for his wife Victoria and their family.

Interesting hobby: David Beckham has revealed that he loves to play with Lego because it ‘helps him relax’

He said when asked if he likes getting creative in the kitchen because it relaxes him: ‘It’s one of the main reasons why I love to cook.

‘It’s why I love Lego, also, you know, because it relaxes me. I’m 47 years old and I still sit there, on my own actually until 2, 3, 4 in the morning doing Lego because actually it relaxes me.

‘It’s the same cooking for the kids. I love to cook for my parents, I love to cook for my friends and I think that it’s obviously come from my upbringing.’

He went on to explain of his cosy nights in cooking up a storm: ‘It is one of my biggest passions along with wine now. I love to cook.

‘I was in the kitchen the other day cooking for the kids and Victoria was like, ‘Can I help? What can I do?’ And I was like ‘Honestly, sit down, have a Vodka and Tonic, relax and be with the kids, this is what I love to do’.

Speaking on the podcast David also moaned that wife Victoria has eaten the same dish for 25 years – grilled fish and steamed vegetables.

And while the sportsman likes to get experimental in the kitchen and sample a wide variety of food, he lamented that the health fanatic will ‘rarely deviate’ from her set menu.

He revealed that Spice Girl Victoria, 47, has only once tried other food – while pregnant with daughter Harper, 10.

Meanwhile, the sports star celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year by cooking up sweet and sour Mandarin fish – although it seems unlikely that his wife will indulge given the fish was fried and the vegetables weren’t steamed.

Discussing Victoria’s very specific eating habits, David explained: ‘I get quite emotional about food and wine, when I’m eating something great I want everyone to try it.

‘Unfortunately I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years. Since I met her she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables, she will very rarely deviate from that.’

‘The only time she’s probably ever shared something that’s been on my plate was actually when she was pregnant with Harper and it was the most amazing thing.

‘It was one of my favourite evenings. I can’t remember what it was but I know she’s not eaten it since.’

David also admitted that he relishes in being home alone because he can experiment in the kitchen.

He told the podcast: ‘Pretty recently I was in isolation for five days because I’d just been to Italy so I came back and on one of the last days Victoria’s parents had a party and I couldn’t actually go to it.

‘So everyone was out of the house and I secretly loved it. I literally had two most amazing cuts of meat. One was a T-bone and I had some English wagyu.

‘I poured one glass of the most amazing red wine that I treated myself to because I was on my own looking forward to watching the football in the afternoon on my own. So I set the barbecue up.

‘I had a nice tomato and shallot salad and the meat and a glass of wine and it was the most amazing meal that I had for a long time. Those are my most amazing afternoons and evenings.’

Victoria previously admitted that she won’t eat food cooked in oil, butter or sauces, and she doesn’t eat red meat or dairy.

Speaking to the same River Cafés Table 4 podcast, the designer said: ‘To most restaurants I’m probably their worst nightmare. I love some steamed vegetables, some balsamic vinegar and then to season myself.

‘I like things to be cooked in a very simple way. I don’t like oils or butters or sauces. This is where I sound even more boring in the food department.’

Victoria also confessed her comfort food was a piece of whole grain toast with salt on it and on her birthday she celebrates with a fruit cake.

She said: ‘I like whole grain toast with salt on it. It’s that carbohydrate that makes you feel comforted and I love salt.’
