Jack Ross and Jim Goodwin emerge as the early favourites to be the next Aberdeen manager… after Stephen Glass is sacked following Scottish Cup exit to Motherwell

  • Stephen Glass has been sacked as Aberdeen manager after defeat to Motherwell
  • Ex-Hibernian man Jack Ross or St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin could replace him
  • The Dons are currently ninth in the league table with eight wins from 25 matches

Jack Ross and St Mirren boss Jim Goodwin have emerged as early favourites to be the next manager of Aberdeen.

The Pittodrie club moved this morning to sack manager Stephen Glass after less than a year in charge.

Glass, 45, replaced Derek McInnes as manager just eleven months ago.

A 2-1 loss to Motherwell in the Scottish Cup proved to be the final nail in Stephen Glass’s coffin

Currently ninth in the SPFL Premiership, a Scottish Cup exit for Motherwell proved the final straw.

Supporters made their feelings known as players let the pitch at Fir Park after a fifth straight game without a win.

Handed one of the largest wage budgets in the top tier the former Atlanta coach was handed significant financial backing from chairman Dave Cormack, with the major shareholder now lining up an interim management team.

And a club statement confirmed the news reading: ‘Aberdeen FC this morning confirms the departure of manager Stephen Glass.

‘Stephen has left the Dons with immediate effect alongside coaches Allan Russell and Henry Apaloo.

‘The Club would like to thank Stephen, Allan and Henry for their efforts and wish them the best in their future careers.

‘The process to appoint a new manager will commence immediately and a further update regarding the club’s interim coaching team will be communicated shortly.’

Criticised for taking a gamble on a coach from MLS Cormack is expected to opt for a more conventional option this time around.

St Mirren’s Jim Goodwin will attract significant backing for the post.

Sacked by rivals Hibernian in December Jack Ross is another likely candidate.
