Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan has revealed Eric Bailly told him that Anthony Martial needs ‘affection’ and to ‘feel important’ again after joining the Spanish club on loan from Manchester United.

Martial, 26, sealed a temporary move to Sevilla until the end of the season last month after falling rapidly out of favour at Old Trafford.

The French forward has seen his form plummet in recent years, meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his successor Ralf Rangnick both deemed him surplus to requirements this season.

And after being afforded just eight Premier League appearances in the first half of the campaign, he decided to leave on loan in the January transfer window and join Julen Lopetegui’s side for the rest of the season.

Martial is out of contract in 2024, meaning he could still have a future at Old Trafford if he impresses enough over the next four months.

He has already got off to a decent start, following up a mediocre debut by recording an assist on an impressive second outing against Elche.

And Jordan, who has spent the last two-and-a-half years at Sevilla, has lifted the lid on what United defender Bailly told him about Martial.

The 27-year-old told Marca: ‘Anthony, I spoke with my friend and brother Eric Bailly, before he arrived, and he spoke well to me, that he needed affection and to feel important.

‘Good. Very happy for the two incorporations (Martial and Jesus Corona), which give us a leap in quality and hopefully at the end of the year these two pieces plus the ones we add, like (Eric) Lamela or Suso and almost all of us are here, and we can push as a team.’

Sevilla currently sit second in La Liga, just four points adrift of leaders Real Madrid, meaning Martial could have an important part to play in a potential title challenge between now and the end of the season.

Jordan added: ‘I think it has been many years since Sevilla was in this situation. And for years the Big Three (Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico) did not separate.

‘There is a lot left. Let’s see what happens. We are very excited to do something important this year, we will see where our performance takes us but without doing the math because those are done on May 20.

‘If we continue like this, we’ll see what happens.’
